Obviously you and I (and about 20 outraged commenters) don't believe this, but you've no doubt read opinions from those that think there's a difference. I'm NOT trying to make their argument and I'm NOT getting into an ABX debate. It has no place here.
I'm only saying that it would be nice to accomodate those that think this. And only for the reasons I stated previously: format compatibility and tagging. I would think it would require minimal effort in changes to the encoder. I don't know whether backward capability would be an issue, though.
Not to beat a dead horse but you are in fact trying to make their argument just. The audio community should not conform to these people just because they think they know better and they think that lossless is not lossless. Why would developers of such formats as FLAC, WavPack, and many others tune their encoders to fit these ill informed, self-proclaimed "audiophile" people? That would be like changing the entrance to a Wal-Mart in a city with a population of 500,000 just because one person doesn't like the shape of a square. Everyone tells him that square doors are just as good as round doors but he doesn't believe them. Should Wal-Mart spend the money to modify their doors just to accommodate that one person who is speaking nonsense and FUD? No, they shouldn't!
FLAC has the exact same audio data as an uncompressed WAV so it shouldn't matter whether FLAC has an uncompressed mode or not. I also find it funny that one would be willing to trust FLAC if it had an uncompressed mode but they wouldn't trust it with normal encoding. Isn't that a double standard?
