I am thinking to buy a new ipod classic 80gig, because my Nano 1Gen. is broken.

But before I spent such an amount of money, I have some questions, to which I could not find an answer in the Internet.

1. My Nano had a stuttering problem with lame -V2, that this also affect the new ipod classic?
2. Does anyone of you synchronise his ipod with winamp? Are all features (coverflow, transcoding) working without any trouble? The Synchroisation with the nano was fine, and the winamp homepage says that all Generations of ipod are working. But was is your experience?
3. I have archived my music collection in flac. Because the new ipod has 80gigs im thinking about using lossles on the ipod. Has anybody some eyperiences with this? I would transcode my flac to apple lossless. But how does this affect the battery live?
4. How long does the hard drive in the ipod live? I don't use my ipod for jogging etc. But I'm afraid that the harddrive dies because I uses my ipod about 1-2hous a day. (train, at home etc)

I never had stuttering problems with my Nano 1st Gen. I bring this up because I'm not sure the problem you have is due to the iPod.

I use my iPod 5th Gen outdoors 50+ hours a week, climbing fences, chopping brush, hammering rebar, etc. Not jogging, for sure, but I've had it since the 5th Gen first came out and the HDD shows no signs of failure.

The stuttering problem went away on the 1g Nano on its latest firmware update and 2g Nanos is stutter free from -V 2 mp3s. My iPod Classic is been 100% stutter free when am playing my -V 2 --vbr-new mp3s.

Winamp does support the iPod classic not, but I don't use Winamp anymore to test it. Also foobar2000 with the foo_dop pluging can sync the iPod Classic with Cover Flow artwork (can mess up on wider artwork though) and convert ReplayGain to Soundcheck.

I would not use lossless on a portable HD player, since it will require more battery power for disk seeking, and shorten the life on its HD. Also your music collection is likely to grow and grow, which could be a problem in the future.

Am not sure about how long the HD life would last. But I recken it might last for a few years, but I have alot of people still using old iPod Mini's and 2g or 3g iPods. But I recken the battery might die before the HD does.

I have the iPod classic 160gb since yesterday and have to say that I am really disapointed. Its even quieter then my old 5. gen 80gb and the volume restriction is not unlockable anymore. I am not sure at the moment if I send it back and try one from america...

I have a 160gb classic and I would never turn the volume all the way up, it'd make my ears bleed....might be different for the euro versions though...

Btw, you're going to have to transcode all your music to alac if you want lossless...no rockbox support for the 6th gen's as of now.

But really, it makes no sense to use lossless on a portable....really no benefits. I bought a 200gb hd to store my iPod converted cache for my -v5's from my flac rips, works great. I use J. River Media Center which allows for "stacking" so you can have multiple versions of the same file that will update the tags in both when they are changed.

About HD life, I have still no problems with my 2nd generation iPod from 2002 (I think). Not using it daily, anyway.
