Full Version: LAME -V 9 --vbr-new encoded MP3 makes strange sounds

Hi everyone,
seems like I've found a bug in the newest (also older?) foobar version. I could reproduce this problem on four different computers. First time this happened to me. Maybe it's some useful information for you.

Encode this wav file with "LAME 3.97 -V 9 --vbr-new" (I know it's low quality, but that's not the point). The result MP3 file makes many strange sounds while playing in foobar. There are no problems with other media players (like VideoLAN or Media Player Classic).

My result MP3 file.

And when I encode the MP3 to WAV with foobar, I can hear the bad sounds in other media players too when listening to the result wav file. Maybe something is wrong with the mp3 playback output?

Sorry for the wrong topic title. Thanks for editing.

I can confirm that I hear the abnormalities on the mp3 you provide, but when I encode your lossless file at the same setting with 3.98b8, they're gone. So I'd conclude that the bug is somehow interrelated between fb2k and lame 3.97 encodes (at very low bitrates? I haven't tried V8, etc.).

No, it's not encoder bug. It's the DECODER bug. I can decode this MP3 normally in other program (like SoundForge).

Which decoder does Foobar use by default? MAD?

Edit: looks like it's not MAD http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....=17728&st=0

I didn't say that it was an encoder bug; I said that there is an interrelationship between the LAME encoder and foobar2000's decoder which produces the bug.

The MP3 decoder of foobar seems to be the problem. As described, even the MP3->WAV sounds bad in other players when transcoded with foobar.

It's not a problem in the decoder. I suspect the parser, it seems to have problems with 24 KHz files (MPEG-2 layer 3).

I don't know what the parser does, but some food for thought(?): when I encode from Echizen's lossless file with 3.98b8 using the following command:
CODE
lame -V9 --resample 24

the resulting file does not exhibit the issue.
menno
Probably it doesn't use 8kbps frames. The problem turned out to be in the decoders own parsing anyway, but only when called with specific parameters. It's fixed for next version.
Echizen
It's fixed with "foobar2000 v0.9.5.4 beta 3".

Yes, the problem is fixed. Thank you. (Note that I've found this problem with -V 2 setting too, where the bitrate is quite low)
Echizen
Even in -V 2? Then it was more or less an important bug.
