Full Version: mapping wavs to frequency range of input

I tried searching for this as best I could and didn't find any specific threads; sorry if this is already answered somewhere else!

I'm trying to figure out a way to map wav clips (specifically, drum hits in Fruity Loops) to specific frequency ranges from recorded input.

Might be easier to understand if I just tell you what I'm trying to do: I wanna record drum beats that I make with my hands on my chest (chest drummers unite!) and have them act as a sequencer for drum clips in Fruity Loops. I imagine the best way to do this would be to specify frequency ranges that should be replaced by a given drum clip, but I'm not sure if that's a) possible and/or b) reasonably easy to do.

I've got Fruity Loops and Cakewalk Sonar 7 to work with. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't do this kind of thing, but it's apparently fairly common. I think Sonar can do it (I don't own Sonar or Fruity Loops). I believe the MIDI terminology is to trigger one sound with another. I've heard of recording engineers replacing the recorded drum/cymbal sounds with MIDI drums/cymbals. That way, they can eliminate all of the bleed-through between the different microphones, get the exact drum/cymbal sound they want, and it makes it easier to fix/adjust the timing.

There is one issue... This is normally done with multi-track recording... One track for each drum/cymbal. So, each tom-tom can be replaced with a different tom-tom, etc. When you are drumming on your chest, you will have one track at a time. This gives you only one trigger, so every chest-hit will trigger the same drum sound, unless you make a separate recording for each instrument. You could manually edit the individual beats to correct this, but you could just as easily start from scratch with a new MIDI file.

...In fact, I think Sonar can directly create a MIDI file, or you might consider getting a little inexpensive MIDI keyboard or drum-pad to do this the "right way". wink.gif

What you need is a plugin like this: KTDrumTrigger
