Full Version: AVG detected FLAC uninstall.exe file as a virus

I just wanted to let the forum know that for some reason AVG has started detecting the FLAC installer's uninstall.exe as a virus. It indicates it as a "WORM/Generic.IMQ". It detected it on two of my computers, one with AVG 7 and one with AVG 8 just in the last few days.

A recent update must have flagged it as I have had this file on my computer unchanged since last Fall when the last installer package was released. I assume it's a false positive. A google search yielded at least one other person indicating a similar finding just today.

(No time for me to research this further today due to family commitments, but I wanted to at least pass on what I found)

I expect the virus definition files have been updated to the same on both releases.

Anyhow, if you want to check out and make sure it's a false positive, you can upload the suspicious file to VirusTotal.com and have it scanned by virtually every scanner on the market! I've had a few false positives with ClamWin on some ancient files, that didn't come up on any other scanners. If it's a new release reported infected, I'd be inclined to wait and retest a few days later in case it's a newly released virus (where ClamWin seems very quick at updating virus definitions).

Virustotal is excellent, I've been using that for years.

But for larger/multiple files. it's always recommended to have a second opinion in addition to AVG.

Leave AVG running, and test your computer with

Online scan (The only reason ever to launch IE :wink.gif

Or if you are in a hurry, choose a folder or a hard drive to scan.

Bitdefender can do that, too.

AVG Free and Avast Free are both pretty good at indicating false positives. rolleyes.gif

I have never heard of VirusTotal.com. Thanks for mentioning that. Will be handy to try in the future.

I was fairly confident that this was a false positive and assumed that AVG 7 and 8 used the same definitions. I was just kinda surprised that it happened out of the blue like that.

AVG can be a tad too paranoid at decting viruses, sometimes it would pick up Securom as virus (well i don't blame it). Which made me have to reinstall a few games that has this pos Securom software built onto the exe.

I would try to scan the file on a different computer, with a different virus scanner or just a free online one.

I don't use anti-virus, Windows machines don't need one if you prevent yourself to use administrative accounts. Not to mention Linux machines that don't need that at all. Anti-viruses became as annoying as the viruses themselves, hogging the system and getting in your way.
