For those who use it, Audiograbber v1.82 has been released.

New features include:
-Support for copy-protected cd's.
-Ripping of CDG tracks (karaoke tracks).
-Shipped with the latest official OGG Vorbis dll (and full OGG Vorbis support).

Apparently the new copy-protection ripping methods are getting TOC from subcodes and looking at session info(???)... Not sure how it performs though. Ogg Vorbis support is now included as well.

Judging by Audiograbber's past I would say this is simply switching to analog.

I was wondering the exact same thing: which admin validated this? But then I saw that copy protection circumvention feature...

This is from what they say about the new copyprotection features. It's from this thread about the beta vesion in their forum, but in the "1.82 final realeased" thread they state, that features are the same.

There are two new things, both found under the CD menu. First we have a fix for copy protected discs under CD, Detect TOC. It has become more and more common with discs that says "This cd will not play on PC/MAC". The cd manufacturers has put an extra Table Of Contents (TOC) on the disc and this often fools a computer CD-ROM drive so the tracklist is messed up. Tracks are marked as datatracks and with incorrect start and stop times.

Audiograbber has now two alternative ways to get a correct TOC. The first is called Get TOC from subcodes. In this function Audiograbber looks all over the discs and tries to find out where the tracks really starts and stops. This can take a while so a status indicator is showing what is going on.
Many CD-ROM drives refuses to access the disc at all in a sector higher than what it belives is the lead out area (the highest sector on the disc). Some discs is made so the lead out area is set to a very low value, such as 224 when it actually should be somewhere around 300,000. In this case the TOC detection will fail.
Another way to find the correct TOC is to look at the session info and Audiograbber can do this too. This way the CD-ROM drive should not at all care about incorrect TOC information stored in a second or third session of the disc but once again it works only with some CD-ROM drives.

Plextor drives seems to be good at finding a correct TOC via these two alternative methods. I have also a HP cd-burner and that one gets a correct TOC all the times without troubles and I have an AOpen DVD drive that also gets an almost correct TOC but has the lead out area way too low and thus refuses to read anything above the lead out area. In short, get yourself a Plextor drive and you should be able to rip copy protected discs now with Audiograbber. A firmware upgrade may help for other CD-ROM drives.

The second new function is that Audiograbber can now rip karaoke tracks from CDG discs. ...

Seems interesting to me. It would be great IMO if those who test it report their results here.

if this new feature to get around copy-disabled CDs work well, wouldn't it constitute a violation of the DMCA? looks like using audiograbber in america will soon be illegal

Why does everybody on this site seem to be down on Audiograbber?

It's all I use for ripping and I think it's superb. I've never had a problem with it.

What is there about this program that I don't know?

On the other hand EAC's development has been very quit the last 6-7 months whereas copy protection schemes keep evolving... I do know EAC is free and the author works at it in his free time, I'm not certainly not disrespecting that fact. So AG might become better at ripping those obscure corrupted cd's...

Let's not diss Audiograbber until properly tested.

For what it offers, Audiograbber is a relatively easy-to-use ripper (compared to EAC), active support is offered, and most of the time it works reasonably well.. Heck, it was my first ripper before I moved on, and is still often what I fall back most on when I need a quick burst rip without having to mangle around with too many options. Its also ( the free version at least ) what I recommend to my friends for a start.

I think you should invest more time and initiate them in EAC
It is not that difficult, just read SatCP.

As long as I can remember Audio Grabber was pitched as a simple, easy-to-easy audio extraction program, it has never been on the leading edge of DAE technology. It then after mutated into Audio Catalyst proving it was aimed as a commercial program, what most users wanted, an easy-to-use, speedy music copier/encoder, and not audiophile quality. I can understand adding Support for new copy-protected cd's because it would sell more copies of AG but I wouldn't start saying AG is Gods gift to rippers.

If your looking for high quality DAE (error detection/correction, offsets, logs) I would only use Plextools or EAC.

EAC easy? Can you really tell me that honestly?

Please... EAC, while well-written and powerful, has a whole load of functions that violates the one tool one function principle... It features wave-editing, CDR writing. Most of the options lack proper explanation. A power user might understand most of the choices, but documentation available is simply sparse ( and in some cases, non-existent ). SatCP's site ( last I checked ) was outdated (quite vastly), and the only site to point to more recent option explanations was the EliteDAE site, which didn't really go that much in-depth either.

So how then can you claim that EAC is a beginner's solution? Perhaps if you said CDex, I would be inclined to agree with you, but EAC is a definite no-no in my book.

personnaly i use EAC for ripping my CD

but there is a great feature of audiograbber: the Line in recording using direct encoding (i use this mainly for recording my tapes and encoding them to mp3 (lame dll) or with the new ogg dll included, using my sb live to add some reverb and the equalizer of the emu101 to enhance the bass

this feature is funtional in the free version
it can split tracks if you use it to record music from satellite radios or music TVs
it has even a scheduler that record and turns off the computer
i use it to record my favourite programs on the local radio which is "brodcasted" late in the night

EAC can be used by beginners and complete n00bs...

Ive set it up once for a girlfriend of mine...
Told her what she needed to know and nothing more
(ie the rest of the options arent any use for u girl..)

She happilly makes quality rips for like an half year now

If that audiograve thing has no secure mode like EAC, what does it do in a audiophile forum? Being effective against copy protections is good, but if you're getting no exact digital copy...bleh.
