PLEAAASSEEEE!!! is there anyway to play .rm files without installing Realplayer? I don't know anyone. Pleas, can anyone help me?
I don't like installing that program, I only want the codec to be able to play files, but not the program, neither have it installed on my computer even I don't use it. sad.gif

You gotta register at the helixcommunity and agree with the binary download licence, but it's free.

It is possible with some extra work

Preparation (you have to do this only one time):
* make a image of your system.
* Install realplayer 8 http://www.oldversion.com/
* Make a zip/rar file from the folders:
Program files\Comman Files\Real\Codecs
Program files\Comman Files\Real\Common
Program files\Comman Files\Real\Plugins
WINNT\System32\pncrt.dll
* Make a textile and cut and paste the text below
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\RealNetworks\Preferences\DT_Plugins]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Common files\\Real\\Plugins\\"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\RealNetworks\Preferences\DT_Codecs]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Common files\\Real\\Codecs\\"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\RealNetworks\Preferences\DT_Common]
@="C:\\Program Files\\Common files\\Real\\Common\\"
* save the text file as real.reg
* Restore the image

Installation:
* Unzip/Unrar the archive to the original location
* Double-click the real.reg file.
* Install winamp tara plugin http://www.musiclivesonline.com/software/w.../waplugins.html
* Check the winamp file extension association.

You can also try installing only the codecs from HERE .
Then you are supposed to be able to play Real Audio files with any player that supports it (Winamp with Tara plugin or Irfanview for example).
I have NOT tried it myself, since I never had to play a .rm file, but it doesn't hurt to give it a try smile.gif
Old Nick
Has anybody tried installing those codecs?
Jojo
I've the same problem...I sometimes like to listen to some tracks at amazon.com before I get the CD...but I still don't want to download that stupid real player...isn't there any plug in for the windows media player?

HELP

I downloaded the MPC with Real9codec but still cant play real audo. When I try I get a Real media error. I recently intitialized my HD and started from scratch to get rid of programs like real one and I do not want to put it back on, but so much online is in that format (DEAD.net, amazon.com etc).

Any help would be appreciated

It is possible to play realAudio player files if you use dbpoweramp. But the catch is that to decode you have to have RealAudio 8 somewhere on your hardrive; in mine it's wayyy deep in the depths of my hard drive where it can't disturb any of my files, shortcuts, or my start menu, it's only purpose is so DbPoweramp can use it to decode and encode Real Audio Files, It's GREAT!!

http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central-ra.htm

EDIT: It's funny to see that some people still forget that DBpowerAmp has the Widest codecs available, plays practically every audio type (by default dAP plays Wave, Audio CDs, Mp3, Ogg & Midi). It even lets you view Real Videos.
shaohao
I ripped the codecs from RealOne Player v2.0 Build 6.0.11.853 and create an installation.

You can download it from here:
http://shaohao.vip.sina.com/RealCodecs.rar
(extract it with Winrar and run the installation)

Wish This will be helpful.
It works fine on my computer.

What's wrong with RealPlayer 8 (Basic)? All "automatic" options can be shut off (well most, it does shove an upgrade reminder occasionally). I think it's the last version that wasn't truly satanic in the way it performs a hostile system takeover. tongue.gif

What's wrong with RealPlayer 8 (Basic)?

Serious security issue.
Read info from Real or some background at Neohapsis
When I tried the "solution" from Real (let RealPlayer get update), my system froze!! I have removed RealPlayer right after the reboot.

Doesn't sound too serious to me. Quote from the page:

"While we have not received reports of anyone actually being attacked with this exploit, all security vulnerabilities are taken very seriously by RealNetworks."

Sounds to me more like a ploy to get people to "upgrade" to the evil RealOne player.

Edit -- I'll try the security update myself & see if my system freezes, will report back.

Edit2 -- The security update works fine here. Thanx for the eye opener.

Keep in mind that this is standard language for such cases.

Maybe I had just bad luck or it might be (guessing) an issue with the firewall software on my system. Anyway I can live without it.

I still find plenty of Real (audio + video) content on the Web, which is nice to be able to access. Can't fault Real (the company) too much, they're in a battle for survival with WiMP, and it ain't easy to compete with a format included by default on every Windows system. The big head-start they had (and siege mentality, admittedly) is the only thing keeping them going. Nice to have some "real" competition (pun intended) with WMP, even if the competitor has to stoop to some lowball tactics to stay in business.

Edit -- I have to say too, I find low-bitrate RealAudio far easier on my ears than the horrible metallic WMA stuff.

I've update my installer to v1.0 supports Real 9.0 and .rmvb files.
English, Simplified & Traditional Chinese Installer UI.

Note: this is a codec, NOT a player.
You can play Real files with Media Player Classic or Winamp (QCD) with Tara input plug-in.

Click to download:

If you can't connect to my web site, you can use proxy to connect.
Here is a proxy list web:

Thanks shaohao, I used one of the proxies that you provided and I was able to download it no problem. I will use your codecs later when I get back home and look forward to being able to plat Real files without RMP.

BTW, I'm at my parents home this week. Could anyone explain why I needed to use a proxy in order to download this file? I have never had this problem before.

I have ever had this problem before.
The DNS you're using(connecting) can't explain the URL, so you have to use a proxy.

Hi to all,

After installing my codecs, you can play Local Real Media Files with MPC directly. But I found it can't play Online Files. I'll fixed it later.
Jojo
I tried this codec once and it didn't work for me...I have Windows Media Player (newest release). The only thing I'm interested in is to use this 'stream' feature...

The guys at Kazaa lite also have a package to play RealMedia, I haven't tried it myself though, I just got Media Player Classic as I already have the codecs installed.

Remember it is a test version.

Real Alternative 0.80 (6.20 Mb)
Features:
- Media Player Classic [version 6.4.4.2]
- Real codecs
Release Notes:
Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia (.ra .rm .ram) files. This way you can play RealAudio and RealVideo files without having to install RealPlayer. You do need a player that is capable of playing RealMedia. The included Media Player Classic supports it and works very well.
The codecs were ripped from RealPlayer 8 Plus and RealOne Player.

If the link goes down, you'll have to visit the k-lite forums for a new one.

question: is there an installer out there for MPC? tried the one with realplayer codecs but mpc doesn't load there at all (works fine normally), think it might be for 2k (running 98). I'm trying to create an autorun for South Park episodes (all in .rm) but having a .rar of MPC isn't great for the technically-impaired.
boojum
This is great stuff, but is there any way to get this to work with foobar2000? That would be sweet.

I'll take my answer offline. tongue.gif

I found the solution

First install RealPlayer 8 PLUS (I no it's still realplayer but its not as bad as RealOne)
Then download the RealPlayer 9 codec from RealPlayer 9 codec

and install

No, it is a media player meant to look like the Windows Media Player but with many more features. It's home page is here. You can find a lengthy discussion about it here.

I've updated my codecs to 1.1 (it contians all plugins you can find under RealPlayer)
Now you can play online real-media.

Click to download:

Remember, it's bigger than ever('cause more plugins are included)

is there any way to use Windows Media Player (for the streaming)? 'Cause I don't wanna install extra Software and I actually like the new Media Player. smile.gif
M
Hmm... I hope all of this isn't straying too far outside the permissible limits of the board. Has anyone considered making a command-line frontend (preferably with a true stdout) with the ability to use these codecs? What I have in mind is the ability to transcode audio programs which are only available in RealAudio to some other, more portable format (Ogg, MP3...) for listening whilst away from the PC. Something sort of like TINRA, but specifically designed for audio.

... and before anyone clobbers me with arguments against the non-PC practice of transcoding lossy-to-lossy, please understand that I am not recommending this as a standard practice; it would simply be useful for catching up on certain radio programs which are not available at the times I need, or in the locations I might happen to find myself when I have time to listen!

Yes, Media Player Classic can play quicktime files too.

K-Lite also have a package for it at this site:

Features:

- QuickTime codecs [version 6.1.0.16]
- QuickTime Internet Explorer plugin [version 6.1.0.16]
Release Notes:
QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime (.mov .qt) files. This way there is no need to install the offical QuickTime player. As a bonus, Internet Explorer will play all QuickTime movies that are embedded in a webpage. You do need a player that is capable of handling QuickTime movies. The included Media Player Classic works very well with QuickTime.

You gotta register at the helixcommunity and agree with the binary download licence, but it's free.

I thought it was a revelation!....until I pressed play and got a frozen black screen...

btw, it only freezes when trying to play RealVideo.

As for RealOne itself, the newest version I have installed doesn't have anything running at startup once you disable it. Before, with an older version of RealOne, I would disable the startup item, and if I ran RealOne after that, a new startup entry would be added to the registry. Now it doesn't do this.
Also, now Quicktime does this with its startup item called qttask.exe. I'll disable it, and a new startup entry will be added to the registry the next time I run the player.

These companies are truly full of it to add all this BS to their players.
