Full Version: Playback Options For PC Audio Files

A year or so ago I embarked on a project to rip all of my vinyl to PC. The idea at the time was that once finished, I'd get a PC for my lounge (the ripping has all been done on a PC in my study), copy the files across, install a decent souncard and hook it up to my main Hi-Fi for playback.

However, in the meantime I've installed a wireless network and am aware that it has opened up more options like network drives and devices like Squeezebox. However, I'm not particularly technology-minded so I daresay there are other options around that I'm not even aware of.

So, my question basically is given a set of files on a hard drive (also backed up to an external USB drive) in one room what are the best options for playback in another room. My only real requiremnt - other than decent quality - is the ability to select what I listen to from my lounge rather than wherever the PC may reside. I'm still not averse to the original idea of getting a 2nd PC if that's the best option. Any suggestions?

J. River has a library server built in, zones for playback to seperate sound cards, and it's the best player out ther for Windows. They support a lot of UPnP devices and there are plugins for Slim Devices. I happen to use Airport Express units and hijack audio from MC and send it outside or around the house to different devices (cheaper$ than Slim which are real nice though).
