I figured out how to configure EAC to rip perfect copies of my CD's using FLAC. I've been wanting to do this for awhile. I followed the instructions at the "essential ripping guide for EAC".
I have a log text that looks like this... How does it look? Is there anything I should tweek further?

It looks like you're using an old version of EAC. AccurateRip is now included in the package and is integrated into the log report.

Everything looks ok, though, except that test passes were entirely redundant and of no value for tracks with 100% track quality. The same is true with tracks where re-reads performed only at the very very end of the track.
Chaotic
I'll use this topic as my question is same as above.

As far I understand it, although AccurateRip can not verify all my files, the ripping is still accurate?
I should also mention that when I listen to the album there seems to be no errors in the music.
greynol
Matching checksums or track quality of 100% are not a guarantee that your rips are accurate; but to complicate matters, tracks that can't be verified by AR aren't necessarily inaccurate either.

Read my previous post about the uselessness of a test CRC, as it probably applies in your case as well. Test CRCs are useful when EAC performs re-reads somewhere besides the extreme end of the track and they should be used if you are telling EAC to use C2 pointers and can't get AR verification.

I downloaded the most current version on EAC and configured properly for my dive and got this improved log result. How does it look?

Even if the test passes are entirely redundant, does it hurt anything to run the passes (I don't care if it takes a little longer to rip)?

Just additional wear and tear on your drive. The thing is that you're having EAC read all the data four times this way. Without a test pass, EAC is still reading all the data twice due to the settings you have selected.

My drive has accurate stream feature and no cache or C2 information.

I also set my gap detection accuracy to secure.

What do I check or uncheck to remove the reduntant passes? Is it recommended I do this based on my settings and drive features?

greynol
Instead of pressing Shift+F6, press Shift+F5 (or the MP3 button). You check the results manually and press F8 for tracks that can't be verified by AccurateRip and are requiring re-reads within the track. Unfortunately this is a manual process with EAC.
flacflac
I'd keep it at Test & Copy because...

a) you can't tell whether your disc is the pressing accuraterip is looking for beforehand, so an internal check is better than no check at all

b) I have yet to experience a drive dying due to wear-n-tear, and I have ripped a good load of CDs. Plus at the current market price of 30-50 Dollars for this specific drive I don't think it's a big risk...

c) usually a look at the "OK" section of EACs post-rip CRC field suffices to check for errors

Anything other than precious time doesn't strike me as a good reason to avoid T&C, and since you're stating you don't mind, go for it.

T&C in Secure Mode is overkill, I think. I would use T&C in Burst mode, and if there's a CRC mismatch, then I would try again in Secure.

Reading the disc twice because secure mode is being used without C2 pointers doesn't constitute an internal check, while reading the disc four times does. rolleyes.gif

The only track in the most recent log where a test pass might give additional confidence was the ninth one; and this would only be the case if the re-reads were performed somewhere other than after the very end of the track.
Chaotic
@greynol - Just to summarize your ripping strategy to see if I got it right.

1. Use Copy in Burst Mode together with AccurateRip to verify that our rips are accurate.
2. In case that AccurateRip cannot verify some tracks we should use Test on those tracks to see if their Read & Test CRCs match. If they match we have reasonable ground to believe that the ripping went OK despite the fact that AccurateRip couldn't verify some tracks.
3. If the CRCs don't match then we should try to rip in Secure mode using Copy.

Please correct me if I got something wrong.

P.S. Or if you have time and will you could write your ripping strategy in a fashion similar to that which I used above.
greynol
My strategy depends on the drive and its features. The strategy you've laid out is the one I give for drives that cache audio data. I wrote this not too long ago: http://www.digital-inn.de/129988-post4.html

Since then, I've backed away from statements claiming AccurateRip is still trustworthy with low confidences.

If your drive doesn't cache and provides C2 pointers, or it can use the FUA command and provides C2 pointers, then I recommend secure mode for a first rip. If your drive doesn't cache and doesn't provide C2 pointers then I'd use secure mode for discs that aren't in very good condition. If your drive caches and can't use FUA but can provide C2 pointers then I'd use burst mode (again depending on the condition of your disc), and I'd probably not use C2 pointers; or I would strongly consider using the reference version of dBpoweramp.

If people want to use Test & Copy from the start, that's fine. Extra reading will add additional wear and tear on your drive. It defies logic to suggest otherwise.

Nobody denied that it might cause some wear and tear, but we're not talking industrial-scale 24/7 ripping here. Plus drives really aren't that preciously expensive - that's the reason I don't see why a theoretical decay of your drive should influence your ripping strategy... .

ff
greynol
I see your point, but there are lots of people with drives that would cost more than $30-$50 to replace, if finding a replacement is even possible.

When EAC is configured to perform cache flushing and not use C2 pointers, secure ripping is extremely inefficient. For every 2MB of data extracted from a disc, EAC requests 6MB. With a test pass this now becomes 12MB. That's six times the amount of usage compared to a single burst pass. Furthermore, there is a lot more address seeking going on.

If you search the web, you'll find plenty of people blaming EAC for destroying their drives. I'm not inclined to believe all of them, but I'm sure some of them are true.
Chaotic
Greynol thanks for providing excellent advice.

I decided to rip the above mentioned Guns N' Roses album on my second computer using Sony CDU5221 CD-ROM which doesn't cache audio data and uses C2 pointers.

End of status report

I used Copy in Secure Mode like you suggested for drives that don't cache audio data and use C2 pointers. Since again all but one track couldn't be verified I made a Test pass and Test & Read CRCs match. I guess that's about as good a result as I can get.

Now a general question. Am I better off using this device to rip my albums since it doesn't cache audio data and uses C2 pointers or the one I used on my other computer (the log is in my previous post) which caches audio data and doesn't use C2 pointers.

Thank you for being of great help.

It's best to use both. Getting consistent results between two different drives provides a greater assurance of an accurate rip than getting consistent results with a single drive.

I have a CDU5221 and need to warn you that using C2 pointers with this drive is not reliable with EAC. If you get CRCs that don't match, try the rip again without using C2 pointers. If you get matching checksums with C2 pointers then I wouldn't be any more concerned than I would be using a drive with a more reliable C2 pointer implementation.
