Select the 192 VBR option and you are golden.

There is no such option. Will you guys stop with the nonsense already?

Go into EAC and look for yourself.

Moderation: Quote re-added due to thread-split.

With all deference, you don't have a clue as to what you're talking about.

With all deference to you as a super moderator, go into EAC and look. I know this is not the correct teminology for the setting. I was making a suggestion about the use of EAC. In EAC .99pb1 for LAME there is an option known as Variable Bit Rate 192 KBit/s which is what I was directing him to.

If this is bad advice please correct me in another post, but don't patronize me.

It is bad advice; please stop giving it.

Maybe a screenshot to detail what you're talking about?

BTW, V0.99pb1 is not a good version of EAC to be using for a variety of reasons which I have detailed in the past on more than one occasion. However, the encoding settings have not changed in any way since that version.

But you are absolutely right. This doesn't work. It is a CBR file from what I can tell. Bad advice, my apologies.

Please read the wiki article I gave you. The LAME MP3 Encoder parameter passing scheme is obsolete.

That said I'm gong to see what command line is generated using the preset you've selected.

Right. My expectation was that this would lead to the V2, Fast option. I was wrong.
greynol
...and V2 is the proper terminology, which was really my initial point. Whether -V2 gives you 192kbps depends on the file being encoded.

192 ABR would have been ok, but VBR is about constant quality, not a specific bitrate or even a range of bitrates. The chart given in the wiki is just a rough guide as to what bitrates to expect.

So getting back on the setting in the drop-down list...

The option you've shown passes the following:
-v -b 192

This tells Lame to use the old VBR method with a minimum bitrate of 192 kbits and the default V setting. I believe the -v option was removed as of 3.97.

Thank you for providing the screenshot. You were right that EAC provides the option that you described. My apologies for doubting that it existed.
JasonQ
NP. I wonder why EAC hasn't updated their preset options for the various encoders (and add presets for major modern ones like NERO AAC). That would make the software much more user friendly for regular users who will likely never find your wikis.

If you allow EAC to run the configuration wizard, it will set Lame up for you with settings compatible with Lame 3.97. They'll work with Lame 3.98 as well, though --vbr-new is now redundant.

Yep. It worked. Now I know how to rip a proper MP3 in EAC. I usually rip to FLAC and transcode to lossy in Foobar -- but I'm sure this will be useful some day. I also switched away from EAC .99pb1 based on your suggestion. Cheers.
