Full Version: replaygain --auto question
Hydrogenaudio Forums > Lossy Audio Compression > MPC

I've been using "replaygain --auto *.mpc" for each of my albums (each in their own directory) and I'm very thankful that it exists. However, it seems to me that it goes a bit too low on the volume, but perhaps that is what is necessary to eliminate clipping. Is there any way I can get it to be a bit louder or does --auto do the best possible job?

Thanks!

When decoding use --prev --gain 0 or 1.
Gives me higher "volume" than just --gain 2 or 3 but I dunno why that is.
Maybe someone can explain?

That doesn't help much if you play a mixture of mp3, mpc and maybe ogg files.
The replaygain stuff was made with a "reference playback level" in mind. This is lower than "normal playback levels" to allow for dynamics without clipping. Pop music however has less dynamics nowadays because of the tendency to compress the sound to the max.

Anyway, I think that replaygain in players (and plug-ins) still has to be developped further. Adjustments like you suggest should also be made possible in all plugins that are replaygain aware. Perhaps you should be able to define a "personal preference replay level"?

I always use "replaygain --auto" and after that I use a constant gain till the song with the highest peak ist just under 32767. ("replaygain -1" "replaygain -2" "replaygain -1.5"......)

This isn't optimal but unfortunately there isn't a way to change the album level adjustment. Hopefully this will be possible soon.

btw: Does anybody know if a frontend for Replaygain is planned?
