Full Version: Overread?

Quick question, hoping for a quick answer. I followed Eli's EAC+FLAC guide and at the end he stated, "You may want to look for a drive that can overread into the lead in and lead out. You will need to get this feature to get 100% perfect copies of CDs." Is it absolutely necessary to have a drive that can overread Lead In/Out? I mean, he wouldn't say that for nothing, but it seems like it's one of those psycho-physical things (only necessary if you think it is).

Also, I checked my drive here http://www.daefeatures.co.uk/search.php and it appears i do not have a drive that can overread. The list there has TSSTcorp SH-D162C listed, however mine is the SH-S162L. Does this matter/is there a difference?

Edit: I apologize if this has been asked. I'm searching the forums now. I was so eager to get to ripping i forgot to search.

It is not absolutely necessary, in fact the differences caused by the feature are minuscule and often nonexistent. I've mentioned instances in the past where overreading into the lead-in can be helpful with pressings of discs that were produced sloppily.

FWIW, I think you're far better of following the wiki rather than that guide.
