Graphedit is a general tool for building and testing DirectShow chains.

It'll show you list of all installed filters with their properities (Ctrl+F), let you chain them together, play with their properity boxes etc. Finally it'll even let you see/hear/save the output of the build chain...

You'll find Graphedit at www.doom9.org's download page (under audio tools).

What about a utility to change the chain that has been installed in windows? Sometimes after installing so many direct show filter, some xvid or divx can't be decoded with appropriate filter so that I have to uninstall some filters.

With graph edit you can build your own chain, but it can't be applied to general link (other dshow players).

There's a util called 'DirectShow filter manager' (can't recall url...), it lists both acm codecs and ds filters plus allows to (un/)register, change merit.

These can be useful as well, I think:

And Zoom Player 2.9 lets you mess with these too: Player options > Manual Filters > Registered Filter Manager.
