Brian Eno and I recently finished our first collaboration in about 30 years. The name of the new record is Everything That Happens Will Happen Today. For the most part, Brian did the music and I wrote some tunes, words and sang. It's familiar but completely new as well. We're pretty excited.

The album is available exclusively from this Web site. You can stream all of the songs for free and purchase it in a variety of digital and physical formats, including a limited edition Deluxe Package designed by Sagmeister Inc. All formats can be downloaded immediately and physical CDs will be shipped in the Fall.

OK, OK, so I guess I'm a bit late. I just saw this album on 7Digital and then discovered that they have chosen a digital release format, so thought it worth mentioning here.

Formats:
  • MP3 (+ FLAC)
  • MP3 + CD (+ FLAC)
  • Deluxe Package (+ FLAC)
Great to see FLAC being offered at no extra cost, with reasonable prices.

I'm off to purchase. More like this please.

A little (too little) info on the background to the release:

QUOTE (http://journal.davidbyrne.com/2008/07/07282008-almost.html)
Eno and I hadn't worked together for many years, but since the Nonesuch reissue of Bush Of Ghosts in 2006, we'd kept in contact fairly regularly. In spite of a slow start, we began to collaborate, still with no plans to make a whole record (or whatever a collection of songs might be called now). After a while though, it became obvious that we were indeed making a record. As it neared completion, we decided to try releasing it ourselves — so far there is no record label involved — though various independent distributors will handle the physical CDs. Those who follow the music industry will know this idea is not entirely new; but every experiment in this area turns out a little different, as no model is right for everyone.

I've been a big fan of David Byrne for a while now, ever since I saw the video of Stop Making Sense, and I really enjoy their previous collaboration, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (Help Me Somebody being a real favourite).

I know this collaboration is very different, but I'm excited that I can get the album in FLAC format for just less than £5.

Edit: More information regarding the promotion and distribution in the Wikipedia article. Some of the linked articles are interesting.

Edit 2: And, to get a little circle of life thing going on: David Byrne and Thom Yorke on the Real Value of Music. One thing I find very interesting is that they are keen for this album to be sold purely on "word-of-mouth and Internet hype", with no promotion or gimmicks (apart from the "digital download with no promo" gimmick). It will be no In Rainbows furore, but I hope it works well for them/has worked well for them.

Eno & Byrne also released the individual tracks (like vocals, percussion, etc) of one of their songs onto the internet for remixing recently. And now Radiohead's done it too with their song "Reckoner".

The internet is changing everything! biggrin.gif

Ah, I'll have to try to find those stems.

Radiohead also did this with "Nude", and the first one I saw was Hard-Fi providing stems for "I Shall Overcome". I do really like this idea, although the online voting systems concern me.

Edit: My Life in the Bush of Ghosts stems eventually found here:

If anyone is interested, the Radiohead stems can be purchased on iTunes IIRC.

I must admit that I'm not hugely enthusiastic about the music; however it is growing on me, and I find myself humming parts more and more. I'm always happy to invest a little time in an album.

It was just nice to see another distribution making use of the medium: PDF artwork/lyrics and FLAC files at a decent price.

I wonder how the 7digital FLAC/MP3 package looks like!!!
