Hi,

I am new and I am asking you if it is OK to convert all my 192 kbps MP3s to 160 kbps AACs (I need space) with Easy CD-DA Extractor v11.9.9 bild 680 BETA? Will there be any mentionalbe (hearable) quality loos?

Again, I am newbie.

Not worth it IMO . You are only saving so much space and its too much work + quality concern (192k is not enough for transcoding IMO) . MP3 > 256k I *might* consider.

I only use lossy-to-lossy transcoding as a last resort. Here are a few comments on the wiki.

What abut just lowering the bitrate to 160k mp3? I have 20GB+ music I would appreciate every MB of more free space. I tried converting one song to 160 aac and it is not hearable at all(scratching). Should I use other converter?

it can be done reasonably well for non-critical use but only when using very high ABR >= 256k or better CBR 320k.. not so with 192k as artifacts become annoying at times and 128k is an absolute cr-p. Someone non-fussy *may* cope with 192 >> 160 .

Try a half a dozen tracks and test drive things. The evils of transcoding are too overstated here at times. IMO it can work very well with certain codecs / combos.

THIS might be a better way of doing it. I'm not sure how effective it is when you're already down at 192Kbps CBR though. smile.gif

Jts, Is this music only on your portable palyer or is it on your computer. 20Gig on a computer shouldn't cause you much trouble?

How about a compromise...rerip some of your collection to something even smaller, say 128k or less aac, and keep the rest as they are? I think you will be happier with those files than ones that you transcoded to 160k.
