Full Version: Looking for recommendations: amplifier/sub woofer

I've been searching around for this, but been having little luck.

My current setup:

Chaintech AV710 (using the Envy24 chip) to
Sonic Impact T-Amp to
Infinity Primus 150 bookshelf speakers.

While I love the sound coming out of this combo, I'm about to move my computer from the room down to the living room. I would like to have the computer become my semi hi-fi setup there. The current amp just doesn't have enough juice to drive the speakers loud enough to say, have some party music playing out of them.

What I'm looking for are recommendations on a entry level amp (or a receiver?), and a small sub woofer to go along with my current components. I'm not looking for bone-rattling either, just something that can fill a larger room, while remaining accurate. I'm not a big basshead, but I do listen to a wide variety of music and would like to have a lower range for the songs that need it.

Oh, I almost forgot. As you can possibly tell by my current pieces, I tend to stay on the "budget" section of things. I'm hoping to accomplish the same with these additions, hopefully staying within the low hundreds USD.

Many thanks in advance.

This is an easy one.

Onkyo TX-SR505 or TX-SR506. You can find the SR-505 factory refurbed for $150 usually; it was last year's model.

It's the best receiver for the dollars you can get and even has thick metal front/face to gives the impression of serious piece of hardware. It also has a flexible active crossover in it, which is critical for your application to get best results.

Get the Dayton 10" or 12" powered sub from www.partsexpress.com it is the best value sub on the market of which I'm aware at that price. 10" is about $130, 12" is about $155. Get two for increased bass integration(seamless crossing) for music, if you plan to use the speakers for critical listening at mid or far field distances(as opposed to near field - at the computer). On the receiver set mains to small and set crossover to 80Hz.
