Full Version: Recording Software for Linux

I've been using Linux for a while. But I couldn't find any software that can capture sound from a sound card and directly store it as MP3 or OGG. If they support effect plugins like compressor and normalizer even better.

I just wanted to use these software to replace the old Tape recoder. As far as I concern is, I mainly used for speech recording and music(not professionally) occassionally.

So far I've found only KHdrecord can do this KHdrecord .
But it doesn't have effects built in.

Does anybody have any suggestions of any software available to use?

Summary: I need a Hard Disk Recorder that can record from soundcard straight into MP3 or Ogg.

Thanks

I think sox's rec will do this.

You might also want to try mpegrec, which records from line-in straight to mp3 using LAME (3.85 if I recall correctly). I have used this in the past for automatic scripted recording of radio programs, etc. If you search on Google for "mpegrec" there are multiple hits linking to the source, binaries and even a Windows port or two.

It's basic, but it works well.

Hope this helps,

Den.

You could try out Audacity from http://audacity.sourceforge.net
A search for audio recording tools on http://freshmeat.net would give you a healthy list of choices.
