Full Version: Recommendations for cheap earbuds

I have Sony Walkman NWZ A815 (good reviews) - I don't think the mp3 matters that much though in sound quality. And for earphones I have Sony MDR EX082, pretty decent, except not good enough for an audiophile (I am one). So, someone on this forum suggested me to buy Sound Magic PL 30s and said that they were a steal at $20. I heard that PL 30s compare to $200 earbuds - is this true? Also, do you guys think that if I get PL 30s, will they sound significantly better than my current earbuds? Guess why I'm angry though, I went to focalprice.com where people say they have the pl 30s for $20 - but NO, they were raised to a stinking $25! headbang.gif That extra $5 is a little out of my budget. Suggestions? Thanks.

Wait until you've saved up an extra $5, and then buy them perhaps?

I know times are tough, but... seriously? $5?

Dude, I don't get an allowance or have a job. $5 to me is very expensive. And how are the quality of the earbuds anyways?

Not sure, sorry. Have you tried senheiser MX400s or MX500s? They were the best earbuds as of a few years ago, at least. i haven't used earbuds in a few years.

I have the same mp3 player as you, and therefore the same earphones. I'm no audiophile, but my opinion is that no $20 set of earphones will be better than the ones that come with the Sony player, they are way above average in the bundled earphones category. You should save up some more if you really want something "audiophile worthy".

Or buy used.

Sorry for the OT, but it's about money and "I'm being angry" (surprised) as well: I wanted to buy Sennheiser PX-500 headphones (ECHs), Amazon tells me 61 EUR+. I was willing to pay some extra (+10 or +15 EUR) at the local "Berlet" shop in Dortmund, but hey: 99,95 EUR?!?!?! Nononono. Happily buy @ Amazon smile.gif

Had a pair of pl-30 arrive today, and I am very, very impressed with them. I have Ultimate Ears Triple Fi pro's and have also owned Shure E530, and although they are definitely not in the same league as these, they really do an amazing job in terms of SQ. Seriously for the money they are staggeringly good.

Get a job, save up a few more bucks and then upgrade your earbuds.

How much should they be costing in your opinion in terms of quality? I heard it was a steal at $20 (not $20 anymore but $25)

I mean since they are astounding for the price, how much do you think they should cost?

Hello? Anyone?

i would actually go for the senn CX series (in ear). i prefer them over my MX and don't use them much anymore. i believe they are both the 400 series.

i bought one new from an amazon online store dirt cheap (like $15) and they are way better than any of the earbuds i've tried.

i especially like them for those sunny motorcycle rides + led zeppelin smile.gif

First of all it has been suggested about a millions times to you, but you really should cross post to Head-Fi to get an idea of the price to quality ratio for the earbuds you speak of. I am a little confused first you wanted to buy a new digital audio player now you want to just focus on a pair of earphones? I won't jump to any conclusions, but I think you have exhausted the opinions of everyone on here. You shouldn't consider yourself much of an audiophile with a cheap pair of $20 earbuds (regardless of how well they perform in reference to a pair that cost $200). That's a bit of as strech. My advice to you would be the same thing that someone mentioned in one of the postings above. Get a descent paying job and save up some money somewhere between the $100 - $200 price range (I don't know the exchange rate in Euros is) and buy yourself a pair of headphones/earbuds if you are a serious audiophile who is mainly concerned about quality. It will only be then that you will be able to get the full experience. wink.gif

I'm not old enough to get a job. And even if I could I wouldn't have time.

Can you list the earphones you had before so that I can get a comparison? thanks

Well he would except I am going to be pretty sure they are all out of your "price range" laugh.gif. Everyone has listed either Shure or Sennheiser here in terms of "quality". I do remember another company they are called Etymotics (They are way out of your price range though) I doubt you are going to find any of those for under $30 dollars without looking into the "used" department.

If I did my research correctly the ones he speaks are listed here on Amazon for $44.00 (I am sure if you looked hard enough you could find them for cheaper, but I will leave that up to you I recommend you try Ebay). The MX series he mentioned easily breaks the bank at $40 dollars. wink.gif

Well then wait until you get older so that you can get your working papers and get a job were you can make some money part time to fund this expedition (like the rest of us working stiffs) laugh.gif . What country are you from anyway? (I am guessing it's somewhere in Europe) In the U.S here the age in which you can start work is around 15. I am sure if you are still in school a summer job would not be out the question (again I don't know how the education system works in Europe) show's how much I know and actually care about world cultures laugh.gif.

I swear this is not an attempt to further muddy the waters, but there have been reports of lots and lots of counterfeit Sennheiser CX 300 headphones out in the wild. I, personally, would only buy that particular model from the most reliable of sources.

I am not from Europe. What makes you think that?

I read that when I did a search for Sennheiser CX300 series (this is epsecially evident on Ebay). Thanks for the tip.

I was just taking an educated guess. My apologies I was under the impression you were from Europe a lot of members on here are. wink.gif

i bought the CX400 pair from a closeout on an amazon store. they seem legit to me, but yeah it was a stumble-upon deal (i had just bought the MX pair) and decided that it was "too good to pass up" - if they are counterfeit then i guess i like these counterfeit unknowns - please make more! smile.gif

either of the sennheiser MX or CX series should work out great - it was just a preference for the in-ear phones that relegated my MX to backup pair.

if you were going for the traditional headphones i could also recommend the PX100. they are great! i use these a lot for NON-DAP usage, lol.
