Should I buy these for $1000? I guess I can talk the guy to $900.... What do you think?

Speakers are so subjective. If they sound good to you, and you think they are worth $900 or $1,000, go for it. Otherwise, don't.

It depends on what you want; getting speakers that sound good to you is the most important thing.

However, if you're honestly looking for reference speakers that won't color the sound in any way, I'd say those were a waste of money. Take a look at these instead:

or maybe these:

The second there is cheaper than what you're looking at, though not as loud and not as good for filling a room with sound. They are, however, vastly superior for actual monitoring. And if you're looking for fidelity to the original sound source, remember that the vast majority of music was mixed using two speakers each with one tweeter and one woofer, a la Yamaha's NS-10.

But, again, the most important thing is that the speaker sounds good to you. And the best way to figure that out is to determine what you actually want. Do you want fidelity to original? Something to fill the room? Something with perfect stereo imaging? Etc.

Hi. I would take a moment to audition a pair of B&W CMN-NT 1's if you are alking 1000 US.

They need a subwoofer as well for full impact though, but the transparency is amazing.

Thanks for your opinions. I'll sit down and analyze my options & then decide what to do. Actually, my question was: are these speakers worth $900-$1000?

They apear to be quite old. The membrames and the foam around them cannot last forever and might need replacement. It could be quite expensive to repair them...

I can't imagine paying $1000 for loudspeakers that are 22 years old and aren't in mint condition. They look like home built speakers with the exposed drivers and wiring in the back...and the exposed screwheads. Yuck. I also don't trust the "more drivers must be better" design philosophy. You don't need 3 midrange drivers; that's just going to mess up the imaging and soundstaging.

If we were talking about the $250 range, then maybe, but you can get some pretty impressive modern loudspeakers for $1000.
