I have some music files that are .wma @ 128kbps and want to add them to my iPod, converting them to .WAV>MP3 files.
What bit rate should I compress these wav files at for mp3 that would be appropriate?

If I use 320kbps they really won't be pure 320kbps since their source was compressed at wma(128kbps)...
Should I just convert them to 128kbps mp3 as well?

Standard answer: this is a personal choice depending on your perception of quality.

My opinion: I would use a VBR setting, and would probably go higher than my usual -V5 to try to provide as much damage control as possible. I'd probably go for -V2: it's worth the extra to try to minimise the issues of transcoding from a (low quality) lossy source.

Thanks for the reply;
But what bitrate are we talking about here with this -v2 setting? I will just be using audiograbber w/Lame to convert the wav files to mp3 using a set bitrate...

According to the LAME wiki page: ~170-210kbps depending on the music type.

Yes, it may be more than 128kbps, but as I stated: it is an attempt to cushion the blow of the transcode from 128kbps WMA. Also as stated, perhaps you may do better to try -V5 first and see if it is acceptable to you. If not, try -V4, etc. It really is down to what sounds good to you.

I'm not sure if this is allowed, but I would simply re-download the album as MP3. That way you don't have to deal with the transcode. Or, if you own the source CD, then re-rip it using EAC and LAME. But I suspect that you probably don't actually own the CD... wink.gif

Here we go again with the wankers about source of music...You never borrowed a lp from a friend to listen to before? Probably tried mary jane once in your life but you didn't inhale right?
Actually I paid for it thur a download site, but it was in wma format.
Like when you pay for iTunes music, its usually not in lossless format...
Geezzz, wheres my baileys...?
Thank you Synthetic Soul, Just needed some constructive input before I give it a go.
