Our goal is to improve the listenability of the speech
signal by decreasing the background noise, without
affecting the intelligibility of the speech.
My question is :
What is the difference between the meaning of "listenability" and "intelligibility" ?
How to evaluate them?
I am more interested in the concept and method of "listenability" !

Hi, Wang
Speech intelligibility depend from the relation of direct wave, early reflections and reverberation.
You need sufficient direct wave level from the speaker or the speaking loudspeaker. Followed by a sufficient Initial Time Delay Gap ITDG, see that animation:
http://www.syntheticwave.de/ITDG.htmBut the early reflections in the time range between app 5…60 milliseconds improve the perceived volume and speech intelligibility substantially.
On the contrary all reflections arrive later as 60 ms behind the direct wave are disturbing for the speech intelligibility. That’s a difference in way of around 20 meters.
For good speech intelligibility you need reflecting surfaces around the sound source, but absorption for long detours. Such room has good speech intelligibility, but bad listenability per example for an organ concert.
