Full Version: listenability and intelligibility

Our goal is to improve the listenability of the speech
signal by decreasing the background noise, without
affecting the intelligibility of the speech.

My question is :
What is the difference between the meaning of "listenability" and "intelligibility" ?
How to evaluate them?
I am more interested in the concept and method of "listenability" !

Don't know if that helps...

Listenable is when it is pleasurable to listen to
Intelligible is when you can understand the words

Thank you.

You explained it literally. But I prefer the exact meaning.

someone told me about :

listenability = mos
intelligibility = DRT

I am thinking over it. Ask more advice.

Hi, Wang
Speech intelligibility depend from the relation of direct wave, early reflections and reverberation.
You need sufficient direct wave level from the speaker or the speaking loudspeaker. Followed by a sufficient Initial Time Delay Gap ITDG, see that animation: http://www.syntheticwave.de/ITDG.htm

But the early reflections in the time range between app 5…60 milliseconds improve the perceived volume and speech intelligibility substantially.

On the contrary all reflections arrive later as 60 ms behind the direct wave are disturbing for the speech intelligibility. That’s a difference in way of around 20 meters.

For good speech intelligibility you need reflecting surfaces around the sound source, but absorption for long detours. Such room has good speech intelligibility, but bad listenability per example for an organ concert.

Hi, thank you!
1.I can not reach you attached website. It is unaccessible.
2.What is the difference between "reflections" and "reverberation" ?
I found you had referred to it as two different items.
