Full Version: Ext. disk spin-up sound

Sometimes I can hear the sound, of my external disks spinning up, in my speakers. It mostly occurs right after boot.

How this is possible and how do I get rid of it?

Details:
- Seagate Pushbutton External USB discs
- Windows XP SP3
- Intel P35 based mainboard
- Audiotrak HD2 soundcard
- Analog connection to pre-amp

Could it have something to do with grounding?
- The computer is grounded.
- The pre-amp is not grounded
- Cannot remember if poweramp is grounded

It's probably the starting at the soundcard. This is the place where "digital noise" and analog come-together.

You can try plugging a pair of headphones directly into the soundcard to see if you're getting the noise from it.

And, you can try un-plugging the preamp from the soundcard to see if the noise is leaking-in through the power supply, or via EMI (through the air).

Of course, you can experiment with grounding and with moving cables & equipment around a bit to see if anything like that makes a difference. (i.e. Try to keep your audio cables away from power cables or any digital cables.)
