Whats the best version of LAME to use to make MP3's?

I'm new to this stuff!

I use EAC and have heard loads about different LAME versions being buggy and stuff.

Is there a new better version of LAME in the pipeline worth waiting for?

Cheers

There's always something in the pipeline, if you're prepared to wait, but that's a never ending process. If you use 3.90.2, or 3.91 (same thing), you won't be disappointed. Also, use the '--alt-preset' settings.

The versions mentioned are the most highly tuned and tested. 3.94, currently still in alpha, may be a good bet when it becomes stable, but we shall have to wait and see.

yes the 3.94 alphas... but they are a long way from been as tuned and tested as 3.90.2 or 3.92. Don't use 3.93 it's broken

Whats the offical website to download LAME from? And whats the best version and command line for general use? I usually encode at 192cbr

You can download the file lame.exe (3.90.2 by dibrom)here
I recommended you --alt-preset standard, it's the preset more highly tweaked for high quality, and the bitrate it's between 180 to 220 kb/s, if you want to encoded to 192 kb/s cbr then use: --alt-preset cbr 192, but the quality will not the same, alt-preset standard is transparent to me, actually I use for my personal encoded files, meanwhile alt-preset cbr 192 aren't transparent but give a decent sound quality, I use --alt-preset cbr 192 in an automation radio software (from my radio station) that can't handles vbr pretty well (windows media troble with vbr) headbang.gif

Would the --alt presets still be compatible?
