Full Version: question about transcoding 24/96 FLAC to 16/44.1 WAV

hi, I have a quick question- I have a set of FLAC-encoded files @24-bit/96Khz that I would like to burn to a CD, and was curious whether converting them to 16-bit/44.1Khz WAV files (which I plan to burn to a CD) could theoretically produce any audible artifacts and/or if this is an inherently lossy process (since the sample rates aren't exactly 2:1)... I just ran the conversion process, and after a quick listen of the first few files was unable to hear any issues, but it's more for peace of mind that I figured I'd check. thanks in advance!

(if this has been asked before, I apologize, but I was unable to find anything about this after using the Search feature)

Both the change in sample rate and the change in bit depth are lossy. However, if done well, neither should be audible under normal circumstances.

BTW, if you do those operations sequentially, be sure to change the sample rate first, then the bit depth.

thanks for the quick response, that answered my question...
