I am trying to figure out the blueprint for development on my digital jukebox software (jukeboxjockey.com). The software supports a variety of formats for music, video, and karaoke. We are trying to figure out the standard format for storing information pertaining to videos; specifically music videos.

Is there a standard for this? Or do we need to design our own format? We can already extract the information from the filename and path and then we were going to store that information (along with additional metadata) in a database, but we would rather store it with the files themselves. So the other option was to create another file for each of the files to store the meta data in.

The second part of the question is whether or not replay gain was ever used for videos. Keep in mind we are talking MUSIC videos - not movies. So this does make sense to use this type of rms normalization for the files. Again, if there wasn't a standard, we were going to run replay gain on the audio portion of the videos and store that data into the metadata storage system we decide on.

What's the format of the music video?

The videos will be in a variety of different formats. Right now, we are using MPEG. But other videos will be in the mix.

MediaInfo sounds like the software you need. It will provide all of the information on the file.

Is there a way to write to the file too?

You can always right click on the file and go to properties.

Isn't it right that certain files do not contain metadata, or even the ability to add metadata? MP3 uses ID3, ID3v2 etc... Is there a standard for:

MPEG
AVI
ASF
WMV <--Yes I believe their probably is with this one
etc.

Video files don't produce a tag like Audio files. There isn't a source to get the information from the web. At least not yet.

So what is other software using to store the information? Filenames only? I guess we are going to have to create our own database for it.

When using MediaInfo, it will provide everything about the file (bitrates, ect). If you want to add extra information, go to properties.
