Full Version: Prolong the life of your Gillette blades

Wow, look at that topic title. It looks like a spam mail, does it not? smile.gif

Anyway, I just bought a new little tool called the Razor Pit and I am astonished by how well it works. Realizing that most people, even audiophiles, probably shave once in a while, I thought I would share my discovery with you lot.

You can read a professional review here: http://shavereview.com/Content/3065

It is developed by a Danish engineer who discovered that modern Gillette (or Wilkinson) blades do not detoriate because of rust/corrosion, but because of soap, skin and hair remains on the blades, making them blunt. He somehow developed this wierd silicone plate that, when you press your razorblades against it, absorb the dirt and leaves the razorblade sharp as new.

I figured it probably did not work, but after reading so many customer reviews (more than a sleazy PR employee could fake in a lifetime), I thought it might work. So I ordered one and received it today. I have just thrown an old blunt Mach3 blade against it an hour ago and it magically (sorry for using the word) restored the blade to its original sharpness. What a breeze.

Anyway, it may be a miss and it may only work this time, but judging from all the reviews and customer reviews I somehow believe the trick is going to work again. The inventor claims the Razor Pit will extend the lifetime of a Gillette blade to 150 shaves (which means about 6 months of daily use), but other reviewers have suggested that 50 to 100 sharp shaves are more probable. Either way, it is still a remarkable improvement from the 10-20 uses that a Gillette blade normally lasts, so I figured it would be appropriate to share this with you. smile.gif

Sorry for sounding like a salesman, but I am just pretty thrilled to realise that I no longer have to buy a new pack of pricy blades every 2 months. They are about 15-20 dollars for 4 blades here in Denmark.

You can visit the product website here and order the thing: http://www.razorpit.com

I am achieving this by slimply wiping my finger over the blades (of course, NOT in the shaving direction wink.gif). One blade lasts for almost one month here and I shave every two days. My Gillette Sensor blades come in a pack of 10 and cost around 15 € here in Germany. I also tested Mach3 and Wilkinson Quattro and didn't notice any big improvement - quite the contradictory actually: the Mach3 at least are pretty wide and I had trouble shaving my mustache right below the nose, whereas the Sensor blades are quite thin and work perfectly. There are also Sensor 3 blades that should give you more or less the same comfort as Mach3 but the Sensor 3 fit in the old shaver. They are also a bit cheaper than Mach3. This of course if you really need three blades which I personally don't.

From avatars, I guess sinspawn wants to be the former, and Sebastian the latter? tongue.gif wink.gif

You really shouldn't generalize people into stereotypes laugh.gif

That. Is. Expensive blink.gif

In my country, a pack of Gillette Vector Plus* blades (containing 2) is only 0.80 USD. And IIRC, Sensor blades are only 2 USD (pack of 2 or 3 or 4, I don't know. I don't like Sensors)

*fits all Gillette Vector Plus, Vector, and Contour® Razors

Want to really save money? Switch to a safety razor and wet shaving with a brush and shave soap.

I did about 2 weeks ago. It takes some skill, but the result is a much more pleasant shave, with less irritation. I'm also getting a closer shave now, although i wasn't at first.

Razors can be had fairly cheap and last forever, blades are around a dime to 30 cents each depending on brand/qty/where you get them. Soap is cheaper than canned goo.

Plus, it's manly. cool.gif

If anyone's interested, google badger & blade for a forum that will show you how to get started.

There is, of course, the solution I used in 1971. Grow a beard. Still have it.
