Nor are science and engineering the same thing (nor is engineering a subfield of science).

QUOTE
Engineering is the science, discipline, art and profession of acquiring and applying technical, scientific and mathematical knowledge to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems, and processes that safely realize a desired objective or inventions.

Wikipedia is a great tool to lookup things and find references. It is not suited to settle disputes over definitions. Some swellheaded engineer might have slipped the word in there.

rolleyes.gif Sure, go ahead, twist the meaning of a word in order to try to prove a point. Indeed, it appears that all this effort has provided proof of something alright; which is just exactly how wrong some people insist upon being, in public! By the way, is there an authority on linguistic content that you would be willing to trust? As well, perhaps someone could provide some examples, from a proper authority, which prove that "engineering is not science"? Oh, and while we're at it, perhaps you'd care to guess at how many times Wikipedia has already been used as a reference at Hydrogenaudio? dry.gif

A scientist does experiments to determine the strength and ductility of various steel alloys. Maybe he does some experiments and creates a new alloy. The engineer takes that knowledge and designs a steel bridge.

At a university, science and engineering are different departments. Engineers are required to take some science classes, but I don't think scientists are required to take engineering classes.

In the "real world" (private industry) some people with science degrees and/or science in their titles do engineering work, and vice-versa.

The key word in the Wikipedia definition is "applying". Engineering is the application of science.
