Full Version: Null Audio Enyo cable, worth it?

Hi all

I have the UE triple.fi 10 IEMs, which are on the second set of stock cables. I just can't live anymore with those horrible cables. They feel cheap, bend into odd shapes and can never get straight. I'm no expert on audio but I know enough that I don't need any fancy cables, just something that has enough wire gauge, shielded and can remain straight. I've been considering a new cable for a week now.

I did some research and came up with Null Audio Enyo cable here http://www.null-audio.com/store/index.php?...products_id=181. The only problem is the price. 69USD + shipping for a 1.2m cable kinda triggers my snake oil alarm tongue.gif They also have higher grades of the same cable for 109$ and 599$, which makes the whole thing even more suspicious! As said above, I'm in the camp of buying cables that do the job rather than something exotic with unverifiable benefit.

So I looked into the components of this cable. The Pailiccs connector is 4.50$ from Null Audio site. The little 2-pin connectors that go into the IEMs... let's say 5$. The cable material is OFC with silver soldering. Just an example, I can get 50ft of OFC speaker wire, 14AWG, from monoprice for 10.20$. Pretty sure that's a lot more copper than in the little 1.2m cable. Silver solder... another 5$ perhaps? We're at 24.70$ now. Still a long way to 69$. Is the labor for braiding and soldering worth 44.70$? I'm skeptical about that.

The only review I could find on this cable is from Head-Fi http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f21/nullaudi...ve-pics-444644/. Again, words like crisper, quicker, transparent, deeper, forward, sound stage, especially in a cable review, trip the snake oil alarm dry.gif

What do you think about this cable? Anyone have experience with this company?

I also looked into DIY but I'm totally new and I can't find where to buy the 2-pin connectors for the UE phones. crying.gif Anyone know where to get them? Thanks!

High quality Neutrik connectors are employed

If you can't find them here, I'd ask the Neutrik people if they do sell these things.

I'm having no experience with null audio, but these cables look rather stiff to me, so I wouldn't expect them not to 'bend in odd shapes'.

Thanks. Well the Neutrik connector they mentioned is the 3.5mm plug. What I haven't been able to find is on the other end: the 2-pin plugs that go into the "speakers". Guess I'll try my luck asking Neutrik

My stock headphone cables broke for the 4th time for my Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5Pro. Each time, I had to pay UE $20 + shipping. Since they've recently removed detachable cables from their new product line, I can't even stock up on stock replacement cables.

So I gave the Null Audio Enyo cable a try.

Shipping from Singapore/Hong Kong was fine. They e-mail you to tell you the product has shipped (even though on the website, it's listed as delivered). You can't track the package. But everything arrived in the expected time frame.

I've been abusing the cables for a month and they certainly seem much sturdier than UE's stock cables. Obviously, I haven't spent enough time to know for sure but considering I went through 4 UE stock cables in less than 2 years, I'm very optimistic this one will last and pay for itself.

They are also much more comfortable to wear compared to the stock cables.

Unfortunately, I cannot comment on the sound quality of the cable because of Terms of Service #8 of Hydrogenaudio Forums. I cannot possibly perform a double blind sound quality test because my old cables are broken. I guess technically, I can compare the left ear sound from one cable with another but even that won't be double-blind because the cable comfort level is so different, the moment you put the cables on, you'll know which is which.

So even if the cable lasts 1 year, I think the significant improvement in comfort to wear, and improved sturdiness of the cables alone would be definitely worth it for me. Besides, the alternative is to purchase a new pair of headphones which can run to US$400.

So I'd strongly recommend anyone with UE stock cable issues to upgrade to the Enyo.

I don't know anything about these cables, but I know a little about engineering...

Good!!!! Your snake oil alarm is working properly!

There shouldn't be any sound quality differences with any cable! (Assuming you get good connections at both ends.) Things like "low resistance" don't matter, since the resistance of the cable (any reasonable gauge) is very small compared to the headphone impedance. (With speakers, wire resistance can be a concern with long cables, but wire gauge makes a much bigger difference than anything like oxygen-free copper or any of that other nonsense.)

And, when something does affect sound quality, I like to see "words" that have meaning to engineers & scientists (frequency response, noise, distortion, etc.).

So, go-ahead and consider things like ruggedness & flexibility and even appearance if you wish. But, please don't worry about sound quality.

Oh, if the wire is too stiff you might get some mechanical noise when you move around, so I guess that might effect "sound quality"

If I were you I'd completely avoid any specialty cable retailer and just get ordinary cable from a warehouse. Cable is cheap and easy to make, there's no reason to pay extra.
