I enjoy viewing mp3s in UltraEdit32, the text-editor that doubles as a hex editor. Or perhaps a hextextitor! I don't know? Usually my viewing is less informative than simply using Winamp to play said mp3s, though I wouldn't really consider Winamp a "utility."

First treatment that any MP3 files should receive:

BTW does anybody know of a freeware ID3-tagger and/or a ID3-stripper/killer that will work on specified files (or on specified fileextensions) reagrdless of fileformat?
In other words; If I want to add/remove ID3 tags to a bunch of files (for instance MPC, OGG, JPG, or whatnot) what program could do this?
Jan S.
Jan 16 2002, 10:42
hmmmm.... no.
but I think the free version of helium2 has a removing tool. I can't be sure though.
It will work on mpc/mp+ and mp3.

Helium2:
someone with a greencard to be allow to speak about it should tell you what it is.
I do not have such a greencard.
i read that mp3trim fixes "sync errors"... does it work
for normalizing mp3's.. which one is better [without degrading audio quality] mp3trim or mp3gain?

Jan 16 2002, 13:23
well.. mp3gain is free while mp3trim is not...

I have specifically said to you that you and everybody are allowed to speak about Helium2 and anything legal. Do you need a manifest from all the admins and mods, or what??
However, I'm getting a bit tired to your comments claiming that you can't speak freely here...
Also, if I were Helium2 developer, I would give a hint to a certain individual about some methods that may not help Helium2 at all, but rather only irritate people, which may result that people see Helium2 in negative light... Unless you believe in the saying "any publicity is good publicity".

I have exactly what I want now.
A statement that I can point certain ppl to that have said I shouldn't talk about certain programs. I've been trying to force this now since no mod.'s steeped in when I was asked to shut up.

Ok, let's get back to making this a nice place again.
Helium2 is a tagger and an audio file managing program.
It can currently tag mp3's and mpc's with id3v1 & id3v2.
Ogg tag format would maybe be added in the future.
I think it's safe to say that it's the most complete tagger and my personal oppion is that it's also the best (tagger and managing program).
Regards,
Jan.
Difficult to choose one:
- EAC (*)
- LameBatch (with Lame of course) (*)
- Tag & Rename
- MPEG Audio Collection (MAC)
- EncSpot

Mp3Trim IS INDEED free. There is also a Pro version, but the free version works great. It won't trim HUGE mp3's, but an older free version, ver 1.26 (which I wisely saved) does

. Anyway, it's a great app! Highly reccomended! You can also use it to fade in and fade out - without decoding and re-encoding.

Mp3trim and mp3gain both use exactly the same quality-preserving method to modify mp3's. The difference is in how each program decides how much to change the mp3's. The "Auto" volume button in mp3trim simply finds the peak amplitude of the decoded mp3, then amplifies the mp3 so that it's as loud as possible without any clipping.
Mp3gain calculates how loud the mp3 actually
sounds to the human ear, then adjusts the mp3 so its average volume is set to a chosen level.
Mp3trim has other nifty features, though, which is why I still use it also.

Linux!

(debian, of course)
MPPEnc (latest) using --xtreme
cdparanoia using never-continue-on-skip
and, to wrap it all together, GRIP
couldn't be simpler.. I am amazed about all the things I see about all the windows software and how most doesn't work well and there are soo many revisions.. hrmm..

And the winner is:
MP3 Tag Studio 2.x
http://www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts
(only annoying thing is that it contains adware, but that can be completely removed when you register)
runners up:
EncSpot, MP3gain, RazorLame and all the Batch utilities from Speek.

Winamp.
Cdex
(very recently) Easy Lame
EncSpot
And of course Winamp is my player of choice using the Dee plug-in.
I wouldn't consider EAC to be specifically an mp3 utility but it's certainly one of my fav apps. Another program that is definitly not specific to m3's that I like is Redfox Indexer. It's very nice for making text lists of mp3's that include bit-rate, file-size and song length info.

And my favourite tools are :
EAC : for ripping.
Helium2 : mp3 tagging and cleaning tags
MediaJukebox : playing, organizing, converting formats, tagging, burning. I find this software xtremely convenient when you have multiple formats in your collection (mine is made of APE, MPC, MP3).

His url isn't working anymore and I tried emailing him but got no response. If you want to send me some contact info through email or a PM I can either set you up to d/l it from my ftp server or I can flip it to you on email (it's under 2 1/2 megs).

In order (that I use to create/manage MP3's):
EAC
RazorLame (& Lame 3.91)
ID3-TagIT (free, just like Tag & Rename)
MP3Gain
MP3 Utility (to find bad MP3s)
Huge hard drive on my server
2 AudioTrons, hooked to living room & bedroom stereos
Archos Jukebox (20 GB)
Oh yeah - and one critically important utility:
Freecell!!! (to pass the time while things are happening

)
(and, I guess, my blender - to make margaritas!)

Lameb, without a doubt the fastest and easiest tagger/encoding automator... once you have it configured.
For mp3? That would be 'del'.

1. Home made batch file creator for making batch files which encode several formats at the same time... (Quite useful actually...

)
2. EAC...
3. lame.exe (--alt-preset 256)
4. id3v2tag (Home made ID3v2.3 commandline tagger for adding tags that Lame doesnŽt support...)
And IŽm also using Winamp with the MAD plug-in...

Hi,
Have you tried playing with categories and smartlists ?
All right MJ8 seems better in that area. But really I don't see a better player for managing playlists so far.
cheers
my mistake Race,
You wrote Music Match Jukebox 7 and I read MediaJukebox 7  sorry !
Well, in that case, why don't you try MediaJukebox then ? I used to be a Music Match user until I discovered MediJukebox and its great playlist features like categories and smartlists.
This program may seem a bit complicated at first but once you've made the effort I think it's worth it !

Sure why not...

But unfortunatly it may not appeal you considering it only supports the following frames: TOPE, TIT2, TALB, TYER, TPE1, TRCK, TCON and TENC... (Frame/header names described on
www.id3.org ... I made the application so I could write TOPE and TENC frames... And also so that I could write my own ID3v2.3 tags to my AAC files...) But if there are any other frames that you wish to be able to "create", then just say it and IŽll add it as soon as I can and "publish" it...

Well, since you're asking...TPE1-4 and TSSE would be
fantastic for me...
why id3v2.3?
why not id3v2.4?
