Full Version: various AC/DC Back in Black remasters

I just realized that my AC/DC Back in Black CD has pretty significant ReplayGain Track gain settings. "Back in Black" has a RG track gain of -8.35 dB and peaks at 0.998322 This is pretty loud, but it doesn't sound like it has too much DRC.

Every track has the same peak, which is roughly -0.01dB.

My CD liner notes specifies that it was digitally remastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound, but there is no release date whatsoever aside from the 1980 original release date. Unfortunately, my cue sheet specifies the year as 1980, so that's no help.

I read on the wikipedia page that the CD was released as a remaster in 1994, 1997, and 2003. I believe mine is the 1994 version, based on when I purchased it.

I'm interested in what ReplayGain values the other releases have. Does anyone care to post their track gain values for the title track along with the year the CD was issued?

Here a my values from a non remastered version, Musepack file:

Track Gain -2.37db
Track Peak 0.900071
Album Gain -3.32db
Album Peak 0.951262

I'd have to check on the album cover for release date, but this must the first version available.

Yeah, that must be the original. I wonder how it sounds. I've heard the opinion that the analog-to-digital converters in 1980 were pretty lousy, but I'm not familiar enough with the history of digital audio to hold that opinion as my own.

I posted a lossless clip of the first 30 seconds of what I think is the 1994 version of Back In Black here:

Back In Black clip

It would great if we could get clips from all 4 versions up, with their (entire track) Replay Gain settings.

By the way, I'm pretty satisfied with the sound of my version, so I'm not really in the market to get a new release. I'm just curious to hear how the masters have evolved.

Well your version is the 1994 Remaster, like the mine [that's a digipack release indicating that's 1994 remastered] the Bonfire version [1997 remastered version] is exactly the same version...The 2003 version is remastered by George Marino.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_in_Black

There is only two persons envolved on remastering, and George Marino remastered it on 2003.
2003 REMASTERS [digipack versions easy to find, at least here on Brazil]:
If You Want Blood (You've Got It) have in one of the tracks 12 dB of dynamic compression.
Let There Be Rock ranges on 9~10,5 dB of compression in any track, the trebble is too high and sounds artificial...
I sell these two they are unlistenable, like '98 the Iron Maiden remasters [remastered by the same guy]...
And anyway the 1994 remastered versions sound more cleaner [less background noise] without or almost any difference on EQ compared to the "original releases" just more compression and anyway that don't "hurt" so much the audio...
