Full Version: Before Ripping using EAC

Hi there everybody (as would Elmo say),

Before ripping some CDs using EAC and FLAC, I would like to be sure I'm doing the right thing!

I just installed EAC prebeta 5 and FLAC 1.2.1b.

My CD-ROM is a Lg HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H20L (1.02).
The Wizard gave me:

YES to acurate stream
NO to drive cache
No to C2

I used the Wiki to configure the compression options.

I will choose "test and copy selected tracks"

Is there anything else I need to consider to rip the right way?

Thank you!

Make sure that you are configured for AccurateRip. That is even more important than test and copy. In fact, I would suggest to rip in burst mode, use AccurateRip to confitm, and only if not confirmed by AccurateRip would you go back and do test and copy.

Bodhi
Thank you!

How do I know if the CD is confirmed by AccurateRip? Is it the logo, bottom right (a CD checked)?

What if, after ripping, it is telling me it couldn't be confirmed as accurate?
pdq
I haven't used EAC in a very long time, but it should tell you on a track-by-track basis which tracks are confirmed and which are not.

For any tracks that are not confirmed, rip them a second time and compare checksums. If the checksums match then there is a high probability that you have a good rip.
Bodhi
It only tells me that it is accurately ripped after ripping! ohmy.gif

Why burst mode?

Why burst mode?

Basically because it's faster... and as long as the rip checksum matches that in AccurateRip, the ripping mode doesn't really matter.
Bodhi
What if I have a "different pressing from the one in the database"?
pdq
Then your rip is not verified and you have to follow up with the test and copy.
Bodhi
Ok, thank you!
greynol
I'd probably double-check all my rips with this drive against those done by another drive, regardless of AR results or test and copy because it looks like one of the Hitachi-LG models that sometimes offsets the data by two bytes causing a channel reversal and filter affect.

Thankfully it hasn't been detected as a caching drive, so there shouldn't be a significant difference in speed between one pass of secure mode vs. burst T&C.

Again, I sincerely hope that this isn't one of the models that has this problem.

How would I know that? crying.gif
greynol
...by checking your rips against those done with a different drive.

To reiterate, AR cannot be trusted to help you, since it's a consistent problem with particular models of Hitachi/LG drives.

You could check the rip with CUETools.

You could check the rip with CUETools.

Also, the next release of dBPoweramp will reportedly be able to check against other pressings.

check the CRC?
greynol
Yes, check the CRC.

EDIT: Make sure EAC is including null samples in the calculation, otherwise differences caused by this problem can go undetected.

EAC is including null samples in the calculation

By checking the box "fill up missing offset samples with silence"?
Akkurat
No (leave that checked). It's the next setting, "No use of null samples for CRC calculations". Leave that UNchecked.
Bodhi
Great, thank you Akkurat!

I'll compare this to the log obtained with another drive then?

Asking me? Yes, I guess that's what greynol was talking about.
greynol
Depends on whether one thinks that 200 people (perhaps more) ripped the same disc with a drive that has this problem, I doubt it. The unfortunate part here is that it does not occur with every single disc. This means that this log isn't going to prove that your drive doesn't have the problem.

Here are two posts demonstrating what I've been talking about:
http://www.digital-inn.de/exact-audio-copy...erent-crcs.html
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....showtopic=54113

Whether it holds true for the GSA-H20L, I don't know.

Stretching a bit maybe but according to AccurateRip Drives In Database that drive has 175 submits*, AND, if there's other drives which would yield exactly the same results, I'd say that it's possible. What are the odds? Dunno.

That's really a bummer. DAE gets even more unreliable in my eyes.. again. sad.gif

Greynol, do you have any information which drives have this problem? I've a HL-DT-STCD-RW GCE-8520B drive. Hopefully you haven't seen this have that problem.
