Hi,

since there seem to be a lot of beta-minds around here, I thought it would be a good place to ask.

I'm doing an undergraduate course in sub-atomary physics. The textbook used here is rather crappy though: "Nuclear and Particle Physics" by WSC Williams (ISBN0198520468). I was thinking of getting another text to study from. Our lector, who has chosen the book above, has no idea what is needed to make a readable text that provides some oversight. Any good tips, please?

I'm considering these at the moment, but any other not-too-pricey advice is very welcome:
  • "Elementary Particles" by IS Hughes (ISBN0521407397)
  • "An Introduction to the Standard Model of Particle Physics" by Cottingham&Greenwood (ISBN0521588324) (this one seems too advanced perhaps)
  • "The Ideas of Particle Physics : An Introduction for Scientists" by Coughlan&Dodd (ISBN0521386772) (too superficial?)
  • "Facts and Mysteries in Elementary Particle Physics" by MG Veltman (ISBN981238149X) (seems somewhat a novel though)

Thanks!
