I just purchased a 19" TFT monitor from Samsung. If brightness is set below 68%, the monitor makes a loud noise (louder than my computer anyway). A friend of mine has an old 18" TFT monitor from LG. It does the same thing.

So if you are looking for a TFT monitor and like dark rooms, you might want to check it out at a the dealer first. 68% brightness is very bright.
