Ok,

So I'm relatively new to this whole better quality thing. For probably about 2-3 years I've used MMJB to record mp3s of my cds. However, I've become increasingly interested in better quality, and i'd heard alot about the LAME encoder and EAC.

So I downloaded them and started using them today. Very nice stuff, not that I really can tell, but I like the way EAC handles a lot of things and I haven't gotten a chance to compare some of my old mp3s with a better quality version.

Anyways, the recommendation I've gotten and have seen in other places is to use "--alt-preset standard" for the cmd-line switch for LAME. I found -preset standard and other standards listed in the documentation I found for LAME, but I'm curious as to what the --alt does.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I don't really want to dig through 10 pages of forum posts looking for it.

Can anyone answer this for me? I'm particularly fond of this "new found" (well at least for me) method of encoding. smile.gif

Thanks!

If you use Lame 3.93.1 the --alt-preset and --preset are equivalent. If you use Lame 3.90.2 use --alt-preset.
--alt means just "alternative" more tweaked presets, and in Lame 3.93.1 --preset presets started using --alt-preset presets. (Hope you got it. blink.gif)

If you are interested in what --alt-presets do, check the FAQ thread: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index....=ST&f=1&t=4917&

3.93 is a bad idea. Even though it is newer, it is not tweaked properly.
