hello folks

i am about to re-tag ~300 mp3 albums and was going to do so using apev2 only. this is going to take a bit of time so i want to make sure im choosing a worthwhile format. basically i want to make sure apev2 is enough or if i should include id3v1 as well. i suppose i have to consider a purchase of a portable media player in the future

currently my files have no tag info. i like to keep things to a minimum and therefore was looking for 1 tag format only. i pressume id3v1 is still limited by the number of characters per tag line.

id3v1 is good for ally my cds except for 1 (chocolate starfish and the hot dog flavoured water) so i would use id3v1 if u wish that youre tags are show on any portable device

Yes, ID3v1 is limited. I suggest you use APEv2 only, for the time being. If you buy a portable player later, it should be easy to generate the ID3v1 tags with the info from the APEv2 tags.

is there a library that handle these APE tags ? (also on unix/linux system) ?

I agree that it is very easy to add ID3V1 later, but it might be easier to add them now. They don't take up a lot of disc space, it won't take excessive CPU power to add them (while you're adding APE2), they're at the end of the file like APE2, and an APE2 player (like Foobar) will ignore them. Given the ease of adding the ID3V1 at the same time as APE2, I'd take that route, personally.

I personally use id3v2.3 because I have lots of long fields (over 30 characters) and like my files to work with my nomad3. Out of curiosity, what does everyone have against id3v2? Is it just that the tags go at the beginning of the file? I like them out of sheer compatibility.
