yup...

as header says..

how exactly do EAC or CDex ripp..

do they ripp the org. stream. to temp.... & then encode.
Or do they encode in prosess.

needles to say am not using any of them...
(partition with 9x. alternative cdfs.. encode from hd.)
(sounds more logical..)

You're not doing anything different actually...

Using an altered cdfs-file just tells Win9x to read all audio discs by DAE. Win2k/XP have such an option built-in already. Any ripping program does the same, it reads audio-discs by DAE and writes a wav to harddisk. Then, you encode the wav to whatever you like.

The altered cdfs-method just makes it seem simpler, more automagic. A major drawback is that it can't perform EAC-like error correction, or offset correction, and more such 'advanced' features.

It occured to me that u can also rip music using WinAmp's or Foobar's diskwriter,
but I guess there's no security whatsoever...
On the other hand, the diskwriter doesn't exactly rip, but it writes the output to a
wav, so given that WA and f2k are top players, the wav shouldn't sound bad at all,
or am I wrong?

TnX.. for answer on a "relatively" daft post..

but from your answer Patsoe..

something else.. pops up..

a. if w2.. can read DAE.. does it exist a hack..
that let you see.. the real content..

b. as of error correction.. i have used deglitch..
from what is writen on the subject..
that one is more accurate.

If that's not ripping, then what is ripping?

You're right. But if you get an occasional read-error when playing a CD from winamp, you won't bother the click - who cares, it won't be there next time. If you write that error to harddisk though, it will bug you every time. That's why there's special ripper software, that ensures good reads.

I don't understand?

Actually, that's like using Tipp-Ex on a spelling mistake. It removes the error somewhat but you still see there was something wrong. Rather use EAC which might not have made the spelling mistake in the first place...
