Full Version: What should i do with this bjork CD?

I've been using mpc (1.9.7) and recently switched to the faster 0.90o
The cd was "ripped" to *.wav files with EAC (v09preb7) no normalizing
the wav file has audible distortion clicks/clips (not read errors)
When loaded into Cool Edit ,i can see that the wav file is to loud (the peeks are clipped, see picture )
I get this error when trying to encode with 0.90o

MP+/MPC Encoder 0.90o --ALPHA VERSION-- © 1999-2001 Buschmann/Klemm/Piecha
StreamVersion 7, Profile 'Standard'
maximum bandwidth: 22050 Hz
MS: enhanced
Ltq: ank (offset: 0.0 dB)
WARNING: There occured 18 internal clippings
Re-encode with '-scale 0.884'
or normalize input file with 88.4%
---------------------------------------------------------------------
And in Frank Klemm's FAQ it says;

Q34: I got the following message while encoding:
WARNING: There occured 31 internal clippings!
Re-encode with "-scale 0.923"
or normalize input file with 92.3%
A34: This is a bug in the StreamVersion 4...7 file format. The audio signal
is so high that subband samples above >47220 are generated. There are
two possiblities:
- clip the subband samples to +/- 47220
- use scale factor outside 0...63, which are mostly possible by
relative addressing (instead of the 6 bit absolute addressing).
The first solution is compatible with all decoders, but generates
higher coding errors, the second can only be played by Klemm based
decoders (which supports scale from -4...127)

I would like to normalize wav file to 88.4% and with some ? magic plug-in? reconstruct the peeks
I read a article about restoration of old BBC TV programs , the audio engineer said noise reduction & distortion
removal were fairy easy with their digital equipment

My Questions are;
1.What would you do with this type of song (--scale in the encoder or replay gain? )
2. Are their any programs/plug-in to reconstruct the peeks/distortion removal ?

thanks,zeb7

It is recommended by the author that you use ReplayGain. If you use Winamp you can use the latest MPC plugin with ClipProtect.
Don't know the answer to your second question.

Thanks Speek

Replaygain is a brilliant idea to be able to undo the stupidity the CD mixing studio's smile.gif ,to my knowledge the only
company to enforce a mixing level across many studio's is Dolby (see their history PDF's).

Apparently sonicfoundry do "Clipped Peak Restoration" DirectX Plug-In ;
http://www.sonicfoundry.com/products/NewSh...duct.asp?PID=14

i'm still looking though some free/shareware links (waverepair)

i must say , its a real credit to the MusePack encoder that it can reproduce these "pre-clipped CD's fairly transparently
because i was concerned about abusing the encoder when i read the FAQ ;
"The audio signal is so high that subband samples above >47220 are generated"
and the resulting effect (if any) it would have on audio quality ?

Although now i may have found a more serious problem , i'll have to double check and search this forum,
don't want to start a panic like i may of done.( its probably my settings )
