Full Version: How to divide (add track marks to) a looong File.

I've been sharing a lot of concerts with friends and the files are all 100+MB and contain numerous tracks. Is there any way that I can divide and tag these tracks (or at least put track marks in the big file) so that I don't have to endlessly use the seek bar to listen to a specific track?

All help is much appreciated! smile.gif

I have seen some ogg files recently with subtrack markers. These markers helped divid the file up into a number of minitracks. I haven't played extensively with these as I don't normally use Ogg so i don't know many many players have support for them. Foobar2k, however, does indeed have support. The playlist shows each section of the ogg file as a separate track.

Does mpc have such support?

I remember a classical cd I had once that had subtrack markers as well for various passages but most cds I have seen lately have gapless tracks and merely define each section as another track. Then again, the cd I am thinking of was for a music appreciation class...

@seoulsteve:
You might want to use CUE sheets...
Foobar2000 and Winamp (at least for MP3) with a special plugin supports it.

@wynlyndd:
I can't recall anything called 'music appreciation classes'...
(Got 2nd grade music education)
What were you doing on them?

<edit>
Maybe they're called very different in Polish, I don't know...

Guerilla soft used to offer a prog called mp3cue which is perfect for this. It allows you to create a cue sheet that works with winamp and perhaps foobar 2000.

The website is gone but if you PM me with your e-mail, I will send it to you.

I use it in conjunction with musicutter. Create a cue sheet then chop the big file into its component files automatically.

There was a plugin for Winamp that could read .cue files created by EAC when ripping a full album as one big file. It was called mp3cue and it was available from guerillasoft.com, but that site is no longer around. Basically it worked like a playlist and allowed you to jump to precise locations in the file, as defined in the .cue file. I remember trying it, and it didn't seem to work for VBR files because of the inaccurate (but fast) seek algorithm that winamp used. But it worked great for CBR files.

I have no idea if this plugin is still around or if it now works with VBR files. Good luck.

EDIT: kennedyb4, you beat me to the punch

Well one of our university requirements are certain number of arts type classes to help us be more well-rounded. (i.e. make more money from us by requiring classes not related to major smile.gif ). I took a music appreciation class which skimmed music history, taught us about different world styles (mostly focused on traditional European styles although in the interest of being inclusive there was some effort to take about Eastern musical influences), and basically required us to go to some concerts outside the class. Plus the class came with a 3 CD set of representative music. Sometimes our prof would ask us to focus on certain movements and passages and these were delinated as a separate track. Even though one piece might carry across several tracks, it was gapless.

I guess my problem is the opposite of the original poster. I have several tracks I want to rip as one track.

(Thanks for the great offtopic answer - anyway I have had similar classes in music school)

You have at least two possibilities:
1) Use EAC/CDex/whatever time ripping (select time section from the whole CD)
In EAC it's the second taskbar button as I remember...

2) (Linux) Use CDParanoia like that: cdparanoia 3-6 file.wav

The Guerillasoft site just moved. Here you go: http://www.guerillasoft.nstemp.com/mp3cue/
