Ten years ago French-Canadians VOIVOD released their masterpiece with very, but very ugly cover "The Outer Limits". Then the band lost most of its pace and I considered them being "dead", but now they released great album with a help of their long-year fan and supporter Jason Newsted (former member of Metallica and Flotsam & Jetsam). I've just heard a few tracks and must say it's going to be of the best album in the hard rock/metal area in 2003! So I am just curious if some VOIVOD fans exist in HA...

I have only heard Voivod - Nothingface, but I like it alot. I only happened upon it by chance, after looking on amazon for cds by another band I like, called "Nothingface"

I've seen the video for their cover of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine" numerous times. Good cover, but haven't heard their other stuff. I know a guy who's really into them though.

Sure
my favorites:
War and pain
Rrröööaaarrr
Killing technology
Dimension hatröss
Sorry, but my opinon is the exact opposite: Outer Limits was a commercial, bland album. The stuff they released after it with the new vocalist (in particular "Phobos") was amazing.
Unfortunately, the new album with the original vocalist Snake is a return to an easy, more commercial sound. Jason Newsted has given them a very radio friendly production, seems he's carrying on his bad habits from Metallica.
"Dimension Hatross" is a classic though of course...with "Nothingface" a close second.

And my opinion is exactly opposite to yours... but that really doesn't matter: important is, we like the band and have the possibility of choice - I like the period from Dimension Hatross to The Outer Limits and you don't... so what? You like the period which brought nothing interesting for me and for many others; for many others it is vice-versa... Important is the fact VOIVOD is a great band!

Sure, there are Voivod fans around here, at lest one :-)
I think the new material less metal than previous ones, but still very good
Cheers!

Yes, and they're nice people too. I interviewed Away and the previous vocalist Eric on my radio show in Montreal a few years back, they were a really down to earth crew.
I remember seeing the original lineup back in 1992 or 1993 playing a New Year's Eve show, they were at the peak back them (they played mostly stuff from Dimension Hatross and Killing Technology)...but also a few really surprising covers, like Bauhaus's "In the flat field" and Dead Kennedys's "Holiday in Cambodia".
They were always ahead of their time, so that's why I'm a bit sad they're taking the safe route now.

Well... it happens when man grows older and has a bit more brains... then looks for safety and money. No one can be progressive forever.

I didn't find these guys until Nothingface was just released, then I found out a few friends of mine had been listening to them for a while before that. Nothingface is still one of my well-liked albums, and I like a bunch of the stuff before that too. I was disappointed with Angel Rat, just didn't sound much like Voivod to me.
<edit> oh yeah, and the new bass player "Jovi'ing" it up in the Clouds In My House video was hilarious, big turn off at the time haha

I think nothingface was the very first CD I ever bought. I played in a hardcore band and a metalhead friend of mine told me we sounded like voivod. It was a good recommendation.
