There have been some news about a new philips little mp3 jukebox, and there is a beta for testing it. 50 selected customers will receive their unit.
You can apply here :
http://www.audio.philips.com/betatest_application1.aspthen, whats with Ogg vorbis?
hehe
At some point, (there is a survey in the application process...) they ask you the importance of certain features.. like Ogg (they wrote it "OGG" without "vorbis"

), and, at the end, wath is, in your opinion, THE most important feature that you would like on such devices

Sorry for my bad english or if this is off-topic... but this is a good opportunity for philips ogg-lobbying

bye!
Always intresting to see a leading brand proposing such a move.
But eur, where are mpc and flac ?
I don't think that
Grundig will ever support it with the bad news today...
Quite a list to fill in but it might be worth it.

Voted for Ogg as supported format and chose 'not important at all' for wma, mp3pro and realaudio
Good luck for all who'd like to become testers

Same here.

Also voted unimportant for all that nonsense like picture display and games.

pictures on a portable music player before. Sheesh

I also voted for ogg and against mp3pro, wma, ra.
and vorbis ist the most important thing that influences my decision to buy.

. Vorbis is more poplurality but until NOW there is NOT any portable player at all, I doubt about mpc destiny
Philips said OGG, did they mean FLAC,Vorbis and even Theora
And, anyone try RealAudioV8. They are REALLY GOOD, at 96kbps RealAudio ~ WMAv9 ~ Vorbis -q 2

Philips already has a CD/mp3 player that does pictures. No built in display, but it has
a TV output jack. It sounds like a good idea. I still put more weight on Ogg.

... me too :-)
This is one of the better polls. Of course, some questions are not detailed enough for ambitious users and some issues are missing (e.g. DRM or Data Storage). In contrast to a Sony NET-MD poll last year, they don't focus on the "download-behaviour", but on usability and features.
Nevertheless, the question for "OGG" Vorbis is not exclusiv, they ask for mp3PRO or Real Audio too, but forgot AAC or MPC. I hope, the results will show them, that Ogg Vorbis might be a good choice. But the missing questions for AAC and MPC are disappointing. At least Ogg Vorbis and AAC (already supported by a Philips-Portable Device) could be implemented immediately.

Some questions keep you from saying what you mean. ie USB 2 is not very important to me, and firewire
is not very important, but having one or the other is.
I hope there is some bleed through in marketing and development, so they will put new formats
in to full size (ie AC powered components) CD/mp3/Vorbis players.
I voted for OGG as being of most importance but didn't entirely write off the other formats in case it has a bearing on whether they send me one of these for free or not. B)
I voted for the Ogg format being the most important. If I see some reasonable priced hw player with Ogg support I would even buy it someday.
Ogg Vorbis support is also important to me and I can't wait for the moment I will be able to buy (or even choose) such a portable player.

wouldn't it be a bummer if you "won" a beta unit, but your spam filter rejected the notification?
Yep, i'm in too and i also got my friend to support Vorbis and downplay Realaudio, Wma and Mp3pro.
I also voted, but I didn't totally dis the other formats. I made real not important at all (because I'd rather eat horse poop than listen to real-anything) and WMA not very important (because it isn't). I put mp3 as somewhat important and Ogg (Vorbis) as very important (even though I just discovered it, it looks very good!).
Why?
Partly because those are (reasonably) accurate statements for me (since I have over 10,000 CD tracks in Lame/mp3 and am only just experimenting with ovf I may have leaned a little over-ovf, but it's looking good to me so far) Even more important though is that you don't want to trigger the "crusader" or "fanatic" filters and end up in a pocket category in their survey summaries. The way to end up that way is to over-use negative choices, or have too much separation between one idea, concept, or result and all the others.

Add yet another vote for Ogg Vorbis
Dologan
May 6 2003, 12:38
And another vote! I hope they consider Ogg (Vorbis) support for CD players as well, since hard disk based players tend to be considerably more expensive. Anyway, the reason I would like ogg support for portable hardware is for fitting more songs on a CD at a "situationally transparent" quality, and having a 15 GB hard disk for storage would defeat that purpose. Why bother using vorbis if I could fit all the songs I could ever want to listen to "on the go" in alt-preset extreme? (which btw is far beyond my transparency threshold)
Hey, tangent, do put this on slashdot please. Though massive applications will dilute our chances of being selected for the beta test, setting the precedent of widespread public support for Vorbis is IMHO more important than trying to keep our already dilute chances of being selected not so low.

Although im an AAC fan myself because im all about uber quality and its better at high bitrates, i voted for ogg. On a side notes, dont you guys find strange the EXP503 supports aac just fine and phillips havent come with a single word about they stopped to support it??? They should made the device upgreadable when AAC+ SBR and gapless mp4 come to the scene... Maybe aac was too young still to be implemented and phillips lost some money on the exp503... just IMHO
News flash! I lost in the lottery for beta testing the player. Ogg or not, I don't get one yet.

Thank you very much for applying to be a beta-tester for Philips HDD100 Recording Audio
Jukebox. Thanks for your great support, the application process went smoothly and ended
successfully at 6:00 PM, Sunday, May 18 in Pacific Standard Time.
Unfortunately, this time your name was not selected in our random lucky draw. However, we
would like to assure you that there will be more beta-test opportunities in the near future, and that
you will be one of the first people to be informed of the event.
Again, thank you very much for your great support and best wishes from your friends at Philips!

The big remaining question is, why
are there different subject lines? Different classes of loser?
At first I thought they might just want to track response rate as a function of which subject line, but
the only link I see in the message with ID tracking is the unsubscribe.
edit: It does look like a pretty spiffy unit. I didn't see any clue on the web site on a release date.

There's still the Rio Pearl. Although it isn't on the market yet, they've actually had Ogg-Vorbis playing on
