It seems to show how much scalefactor scaling has been used in noise shaping process. When scalefactor scaling is used, then the allocation of quantization noise is more dynamic: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/showth...t=2604#post5608
In princible, the more it's used, the higher encoding efficiency there is. It's not without problems though. Alt-preset vbr modes takes this issue into account.

If I remember correctly this shows the maximum bit reservour. With vbr coding it's usually low. You really cannot say if higher or lower number is better... It's just information.

ok, scale factor... the higher the percentage the better it is

Well, it depends. The higher the percentage, the higher the efficiency is, but there's a greater chance for quality glitches in some special situations.

From pure quality point of view it could be better if the percentage is lower with vbr coding, and higher with low bitrate cbr. But the situation is not so simple and straightforward. It can well be that with certain vbr setting the percentage is higher and quality is better.
I would advice not to worry or make any conclusions about the quality based on it either.

thank you for helping me understand, JohnV
