Full Version: What dB value should I give for albums in MP3 Gain

Hi,
I have a few MP3 albums that I have ripped. This is what I want to do:
  • Preserve relative volumes in each album.
  • Eliminate all clipping (even theoritical).

The problem is I don't know what value to enter in the "volume level dB" field. How should I compute the precise value for each album? I know, the first reaction would be "Read the FAQ". But I have read it and I couldn't understand much. I can do the calculation if only someone would tell me what to compute in plain old English!! Thanks.

If you're just going to listen to MP3s and nothing else, it doesn't matter what dB value you choose (not really), as long as your files don't clip.

If you're going to listen to replaygained MPCs and vorbisgained Ogg Vorbis files as well as MP3s, then you'll be better off using 89dB. Replaygain programs for MPC and Ogg Vorbis use 89dB as target volume, AFAIK. You'll want all your files to have the same perceived volume.

If your files /do/ clip, (i.e., you see a red Y in the clipping column), then you'll have to choose what to do: lower the volume some more, or let it clip.

If there's anything I've got wrong, anything left unclear, or if there's anything to add, please speak up. :)
