Hi,
is there a way to download 0.58? I can't play all my files with the new version and I won't take the time to remove ID3v2 tags from them.. since no new features I need, I would switch back...
any link?
thanks

Why can't you play all of your files with the new version? You sure you installed all the audio plugins that you need for your files? I believe the 0.6 installer doesn't automatically install all the audio plugins, you have to do a custom install to do that.
There is an option somewhere in the preferences that automatically kills all of the ID3v2 tags in each file as you play them, might be an option for you.

you can also read ID3v2 with the new compile of the plugin.
What he's saying is that he is one of the many proud users of Cool Player, the only thing known to attach ID3v2 tags to .ogg files. Rather than bothering to find a way to remove the junk from his files and make them legal again, he intends to continue using an older version that allows illegal files like that.

ohh I see..
Coolplayer's tagging for Vorbis sucks!
(I though It'd be fixed by now, since it was first reported about 2 months ago)

From what I understand, it was added, knowing that it was a corruption of the standard, at the request of some users.

all the other players should follow f2k example and add the option to convert the tags to the right format and automatically remove id3v2

Ya, most likely.
thanks for your help

By the way, whats the use of not playing those file why not just give a warning or something like that?

I still don't get it though, why would anyone have ID3v2 tags in an Ogg file if he/she didn't use CoolPlayer?

True, as there'll be more threads like this in the future ...

I guess the files I downloaded were encoded by someone who used coolplayer
Which is just one of the reasons I hate P2P networks that are based on file hashes. When I find files that are broken, I just move them out of my share and fix them. Maybe in the future, I should bother to waste my disk space with a redundant copy just so I can rate it as broken.

Maybe I'm just stupid, but couldn't you simply fix it, generate a new hash, and re-share it, passing it off as your own?
/\/ephaestous
May 4 2003, 22:52
yes but it'd kill multiuser downloads
Curi0us_George
May 4 2003, 23:14
So? The alternative is to remove it from your share, fix it, and not re-share. So why not just share a fixed version?
Really hard to accomplish anything if the original file is very popular or linked by indexing services.
I don't see that option to kill id3v2 tags. That would actually be a great plugin - an automatic tag compliance plugin...If there's id3v2, just copy it to v1 and/or ape tags on playback.

Ya,
this is all interesting, but why not simply accept files that contain ID3v2 and simply ignore the tag isntead of erasing it or not reading the file?

Because it'd encourage lazy programers of Open source players to do things their way instead of following the spec

true, but maybe just giving a warning before playing the file? Because this maybe discourages lazy programers, but it also defavourizes normal users (like me)

Personally, I'd like to see an option to have foobar automatically strip the trash permanently.
I'm definitely not in favor of supporting the playing of corrupted files. That's just ridiculous and unnecessary. Don't bitch at Peter. Bitch at the jackass who put ID3 tags in your ogg files.

if it refuses to play then it is more likely to encourage said 'normal users' to moan at said lazy programmers until they fix their rubbish programming...
if it just warned then you wouldn't do anything about it..

I hope you appreciate this. I had to mess up a perfectly valid file to get you this information. (Actually, it's a copy of a song I don't care about anyway.)
