When I come across people that say they know --alt preset standard -Z is better, yet they use --r3mix for the smaller filesize, I usually suggested --alt preset standard -Y. Is this the right thing, will it produce a similar filesizeto r3mix, or bigger, or smaller?? Or is it --alt preset standard -Z -Y? Thanks wink.gif

yeah, -Y should usually reduce size, and it's usually the best way to go if you want a bit smaller size and still retain as much quality as you can. I'm not sure about the -Z in this case, but it will probably still work as intended, though that will likely increase size ever so slightly. Not enough to cancel out -Y's savings I imagine though.

Yeah, I believe this is the generally recommended approach. I'm not sure if any listening tests have been done of --aps -Y vs. ABR 170 or so, but I think most people would guess --aps -Y would be better. It'll certainly be better than --r3mix in any case.

On a somewhat related note, the -Y switch slows down encoding by about 30% for me... is this normal?

In the latest builds of 3.90.2 (a.k.a. 3.90.3) the -Z switch is now part of aps

In my experience, aps -Y still gives files larger than --r3mix by about ~10-15 kbps. If bitrate equivalent to --r3mix is absolutely critical I would say --preset medium on lame 3.93.1 would be the way to go. I know it's not as tested as aps and definitely not transparent for golden ears (well, for golden ears no MP3 is absolutely transparent, so let's say "silver ears" then). Anyway, I consider myself an "average-eared" guy interested in quality, and for me --preset medium suits my needs perfectly.

Really, is anyone even remotely bothered by this?

Why?

I use 3.90.2 --alt-preset standard -F -Y -Z, excellent qualtiy at ~170-190kbit/s
-Y prevents bloating bitrate to 230+ on hard'n'heavy music. I really cant hear a slightest difference
-Z makes encoding a little faster and is accepted to give higher quality also by now afaik
-F enforces 128k frames as absolute minimum (I always have a bad feeling about 32/40k frames, some hardware players may not like them)

I don't think you can get more bang for the buck with mp3 and still have very high quality
