LameBrain is a freeware LAME GUI for Mac OS X. It comes with single and batch file encoders, as well as a CD Ripping tool with FreeDB integration. A LAME binary for OS X is also included, but you can use your own version if desired.

The current "stable" version of LB is 0.5.2, and can be downloaded from:

There is also a discussion list for LameBrain. To subscribe, send an email to:

I welcome feature requests, constructive criticism, etc.

Thanks!

coolies. I'll try this out on monday at school (where we use macs)

Thanks for this one, Ed.

I just wish there is a way to choose the 3.90.2 Lame version that is so recommended in this forum. I mean, can you include that version (compiled for OS X) in the next release? I just got my G4 and I am clueless so far about Unix commands. Also, a batch tagger for MP3's would be super built right in LameBrain.

Again, I appreciate your effort and I will keep on checking your software.

Thank you, hellboy!

Including two separate LAME binaries would probably be overkill, but I wouldn't mind compiling that version and putting it up on my site. You could then download that version and overwrite the one that comes with LameBrain. Drop me an email if you want me to do that.

I'll keep the batch tagging suggestion in mind. Once I've got the current near-term goals completed, I could probably work on something like that.

funkatron, glad to see another Macintosh user here. I second the request to offer a compiled Mac OS X version of LAME 3.90.2. Could you also do PPC assembly and Altivec optimizations to LAME while you are at it? smile.gif Thanks, spies

WOW! just found this today. Thanks for putting this front end together. Now I can get rid of ripbeak. Also, count another vote here for 3.90.2.

I'm working on the 3.90.2 compile... having some problems getting it going (it's breaking in the ./configure step). I'm no expert on the configure/make process, though, so I'll probably talk to a friend who understands it better.

every source version of 3.90.2 i've found on the web (5 of em) returns a "./configue: command not found" when i try to compile it in osx. my gcc is good -- i compile 3.92 from the sourceforge mirror easily. unfortunately, they do not have a 3.90.2 laying around. i have also tried various ownership/permissions combos and user combos for running the configure command, including root, to no effect. bleh. so, i'd second a request for a version of 3.90.2 that compiles on a mac. and 3.90.3, for that matter. (i also wish people would include source instead of just dlls when hosting things, like, say, the lame 4 alpha 6. mac users are left out of the loop -- and we could offer evidnce of how much or little of the lame 4 performance gain is due to code optimizations rather than compiler/cpu optimizations.)
pacohaas
you have to change the permissions on the configure script so you have execute rights
brett
ah, but i did so. i assume the funk did too.
funkatron
It's not a permissions problem AFAICT, although I have to execute configure as so:

CODE
sh ./configure

instead of just doing
CODE
./configure

otherwise I get a "bad interpreter" error.

As far as I can tell, all the problems I'm having are related to the DOS-type line breaks in the config files, make files, and directory/file names. I assume they're like this because it was intended to be compiled on Windows machines.

I've successfully gotten through the configure step by removing the DOS-isms from the various config scripts, and I'm now working through the make file issues. When I get this running, I'll post a binary and the working source.
funkatron
Okay, I've gotten the source problems sorted (all issues with the DOS-style line breaks). Here are source and binary downloads:

Please let me know if these work okay.
brett
great job, funk! it installed just fine using the "sh" method. (funny -- the 3.92 (and other various alphas prior to that) installed just fine without "sh" before ./configure.) thanks again!
