I have been going crazy when listening to MP3's that I download. I have to pass most of them through Cool Edit's hiss reduction to make them half decent. I know it's not my headphones/sound card because after cleanup they sound near perfect but then I have to deal with re-encoding artificats. My question is this: is there a plugin for winamp or foobar that can in realtime remove hiss in the same way that Cool Edit does? I know Creative Playcenter can do this but I hate that program. This would save me lots of time. Thanks.

The only solution I can think of is using AdaptX in Winamp together with some de-hiss DirectX filter (the best one is from Waves, IMO)

I don't suppose the DirectX filter in Waves is free, is it?

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I downloaded Adaptx and have been trying different plugins. So far the Sonic Foundry vinyl restoration plugin has been perfect for my purposes. I can finally listen to MP3's with my Sennheiser eH 2200's again without cringing every 20 seconds! I also have experimented with some reverb and compression plugins. This board has been such a great resource. Thanks everyone.
