Plextor Europe is proud to announce a new release of the PlexTools Professional (download upgrade here) software.

This in-house written utility has proven to be stable, precise and useful. It offers high quality audio and multimedia capabilities and advanced control of several powerful features of Plextor drives. The distinctive design allows ease of use for newcomers without compromising on the powerful features that experienced burners demand.

Here's the overview of the functions:
  • 'General Information' lists the drive's hardware, including jumper settings.
  • 'Drive Settings' controls the drive's adjustable settings, like: read speed, spindle motor spin-down time, etc.
  • 'Drive Information' shows the capabilities of the drive.
  • 'CD/DVD Info' reveals extensive information about the inserted disc, like: format, sessions and tracks, manufacturer, CD TEXT, etc.
  • 'Multimedia Player' uses the installed MCI devices for playback of MIDI, Audio and Video files.
  • 'AudioCD Player' uses the installed MCI devices for playback of AudioCD's.
  • 'Digital Audio Extraction' delivers high-precision WAV, MP3, OGG and APE files from audio tracks, with extra features like a choice of Smart Advanced DAE Error Recovery Strategies, freedb support, and CD TEXT editing as well as ID3-tag editing when MP3 encoding.
  • 'AudioCD Maker' creates personalised Audio CD's from WAV, MP3, OGG and APE files, with editable CD TEXT or ID3-tag and freedb support.
'CD-ROM Maker' gives the opportunity to create standard CD-ROM's by a simple Drag&Drop&Burn action. This handy function can be used for storage or backup of files and folders, as wel as an easy way to transport data between computers.
  • 'CD Copy' for accurate CD duplicating with the capability to add CD TEXT or freedb information and even create or burn ISO images.
  • 'CD/DVD RW Functions' erases CD-RW and DVD RW discs so data can again be written to them.
  • 'CD Test' scans your disc for uncorrectable errors and identifies potential read errors.
  • 'Read Transfer Rate Test' performs a sequential reading of all sectors on the disc while calculating the transfer rate at the same time.
  • 'Write Transfer Rate Test' performs a sequential write test while calculating the transfer rate at the same time.
The following additional functions and features are currently only available for the PlexWriter Premium:
  • 'Drive Settings' page with GigaRec, SecuRec and Silent Mode.
  • 'Q Check C1/C2 Test' measures the quality of a written or pressed disc by counting the number of low level errors.
  • 'Q Check FE/TE Test' measures the mechanical characteristics of blank media.
  • 'Q Check Beta/Jitter' shows the write quality by checking the jitter rate and the beta value of written media.
Besides these functions, PlexTools Professional has many excellent features, like hardware tree and direct feedback to our support team as well as more hidden advantages like Direct OverWrite of CD-RW discs and accurate logging of all writing functions.

They jumped right from version 1.21 to 2.02?

And the file size of the installer increased by 6mb. It's starting to feel like bloatware for us older, non-premium Plextor owners. Anybody test the DAE yet to see if there's any new features? DAE is the only thing I use Plextools for.

Well, according to this page, PlexTools Professional v2.00 was released 1 April, version 2.01 15 April, and version 2.02 1 May. But one can wonder how Plextor defines 'release' when the 'releases' not even were made available on Plextor's own download page...

I haven't been able to track any changes in the Direct Audio Extraction utility. The freedb support seems to be broken though. Can anyone confirm this?

I don't think it's a new version of 1.xx plextools,it upgrades only 2.xx and not 1.xx installations. I'm an owner of an old plex drive (16x) that came with plextools 1.xx,so I can't use it. Rather dissapointing...

I suppose u r right, 'cos the installer prompted me to uninstall older versions, whereas
previous updates didn't require that of course...

Nevertheless, I installed it just fine (after uninstalling version 1.21) but the new features don't
seem to be available for my drive, which is weird, 'cos my Plexwriter 482448A isn't exactly old...

PlexTools Professional is a new software package available only with the PlexWriter Premium 52/32/52 CD-RW drive retail kit.  PlexTools Professional contains additional features unique to the PlexWriter Premium.  These features do not work with any other Plextor product.

I stand corrected.
