Hi,
I tried to dowload some stuff from Rarewares and got a message about "webmasters" and "stealing bandwidth".
I don't understand this and would be obliged if one of you kind gentlemen would assist. Please remember my extreme age and internet ignorance.

This is because RW uses "leech" protection to avoid other sites linking directly to files hosted at HA and thereby "stealing BW".
This works by reading so called referes. This means that RW checks which site you download from. But download client usually give the wrong refer and therefore RW believe you are downloading from another site. Disable you download client or set it up properly.
If you use getright: tools --> getright config --> advanced --> protocol --> generate from the download URL.
I guess other download programs will have an option like this.

if you connecte to a proxy it cna strip the refer header as an "privacy feature"
So if you are connecting via a proxy try disabling the proxy and connect diretcly

Do you use firewall?
Some firewalls also strip the refer header.
