hello again,

i just added a linux distro to my comp [dual booting] and am wondering what software [if any] peeps are using to rip cd's and encode to MPC for LINUX [i am thinking FRONTEND here...not the decoder/encoder...i have those...]

and also, i am wondering about the compatibility of EAC with LINUX [wine]...i have heard that it is possible, but how? doesn't work for me at all...

if i can get EAC and a nice mpc frontend enc/dec that will give me a little more reason to dump m$98SE for good...

I know that some linux users like CD Paranoia. Check it out at www.xiph.org/paranoia. You could run EAC on a windows simulation program too, but I don't know anyone who does that. I myself am not a Linux user, though I may become one, or at least partition my HD for double usage, soon.

Okay CD-Paranoia is just fine and produces mostly files as good as EAC. If you want a front-end (CD-Paranoia -> *.wav -> *ogg/*mp3) I would suggest Grip, it has build-in Paranoia and CDDB support. Binaries are available at the Site or at freshrpms.net (for RedHat).

Another great front-end for CDparanoia is Jack, it has support for lame, ogg, but no mpc. http://www.home.unix-ag.org/arne/jack/

can anyone further the comparison to cdparanoia and EAC? i would assume that EAC is superior, but if cdparanoia comes close...well, then at least it is worth the try...

i was looking for a program [think EAC's user defined encoder] that works with any encoder...does grip do this? any other programs that you know about?

CDex uses Monty's CDparanoia library for ripping.

In fact you can use Grip with any encoder. But if you want something special for you start learning perl and build your own ripping solution...

Well,
Been hagin around for about 5 months but decided to make my first ever post, aside from adding links to Grip and Cdapranoia!!! Woho.

I used to use a dual boot systerm up untill about a year ago and since then i've never looked back. Only a few prog's like EAC are of an real use, but by runing the latest developmental versions of WINE and after setting them up properly, i can run EAC with generally no problems at all! works like a dream. Only downside is that windows compiled binaries for compression have to be used which takes a bit of a speed hit compared to windows!!

I generally find that EAC gives a better output than CDParanoia but CDParanoia still gives exelent output, therefore i use GRIP, a front end for CDParanoia 99% of the time.

Im not any good at scripitng myself but another highly configurable program for Linux is ABCDE, it's a bit harder to set up than grip but more stable and doesn't have the disadvantages of using WINE!!

Not really said much of importance here so ill stop now, just felt like expressing my opinion, not much talk of LINUX really here but i have quite an exitment for it now, i never wanna go back to another OS again ( saying that, im on a friends p2 300 with win2000! makes me feel ill!!)

whenever i try to execute grip...nothing happens...so i open a terminal and execute grip and i get an error display of "unable to initialize /dev/cdrom" but i can put in an data disc and it reads fine....what gives? i think this mandrake 8.2beta is full of crap...

Is it a permission issue?
Try running grip as root and see if it works then, if so chmod the permission of the user you regularly log in as and all should be fine.
Also i think the CD drive, if not SCSI, has to used the Generic IDE-SCSI features of the kernel else you may also get problems. If your not sure how do do this, check out

it's designed for CD writing but much of it is suitable for setting permissions etc.

Also which version of GRIP are you using??

yes, i believe that you are right...i think it is a permission issue...

i am new to linux [this "year", in fact] and haven't read all that i need to - and am planning to do so soon. but what i don't understand is that i tried to modify the permissions as root and nothing happened...also through linuxconf but the cdrom drives [i have a cdrw + cdrom] do not appear...i think i just need to learn more about this new, great OS....thanx for the help. any more suggestions?

Ok,
I don't use Mandrake and don't know linuxconf but i'll see if i can write u a lil guide. Don't mean to be patronising to you if u know and have done all this.

The directories u probably have are /cdrom and /cdrecorder or somthing along those lines, u'll know what u use.
These are just links to the actuall hardware nodes. Type "ls -la /cdrom" or whatever your drive is and it'll show /cdrom -> /dev/hda or somthing similar. This is the acula cdrom device.
Type ls -la /dev/hda and it'll list the permissions on the left.
If you want all users to have total access to the drive which is by far the easiest but least secure method, type "chmod a+rwx /dev/hda" and then the permissions will have changed.

Now audio CD's should be accessible by everyone. Start up XMMS or CDParanoia or something which accesses audio CDs and try and rip or play one. There is no need to mount the CD though so don't try doing that as it'll give errors.
