The topic says it all... your comments please on this years Eurovision.

I think Turkey had a pretty lame line up... was very surprised they even won! Anyways had a good time laughing and enjoying the show as it was shown on television. Definitely watch it again just for the sarcastic remarks hehehehe and obviously the wonderful talent they have wink.gif.

The Eurovision Song Contest is rigged and corrupted. The performance and quality of the songs vary much.
It's a matter of taste, but I never feel my favorites win. I wanted Russia or Belgium to win.
Turkeys song was bull, and United Kingdoms entry was it's ekscrements.

The male host was annoying and rude when dialing the voting-messengers in each country.

"Hello Reiga, tank yu..."
"Yes, shut up please and give me the votes."
"Oh sura. Unaitet Kengdum, nu poinds. Ant teh twilf poinds gus to ouwa vundaful naibors, XX."

wink.gif

That being said and done, I still can't help but watch the show each year.

It's funny how my country (Greece) always goes to the contest
with high expectations and always fails miserably...

In the name of all Poles, I'd like to apologize for our contribution this year (Ich Troje) *yuck* *vomit* *and vomit again*

Why can't we send some good Polish artists, like Vader instead? biggrin.gif

I couldn`t say it better. Almost anything is better than "Ich Troje"...

The fact is that Eurovision is *supposed* to be good, even if it's crap (when I watched it last time I couldn't find a decent song, I didn't watch this year, but I am sure it was the same or even worse).

In the UK, it's definitely viewed as CRAP - for many people, it's unmissable crap. Our presenter (Terry Wogan) has spent the last few decades taking the micky out of (i.e.making fun of) most of the presenters and acts - that's why people watch!

Of course, this year, we really managed the crap element with our zero points!

There are three theories going around:

1) the performance was poor
2) no one likes us after the war
3) the BBC only allow one decent song through per decade, because they can't afford to host it any more often.

The presumption in 3 is that we could win it every year if we wanted to, but our attempt to not win it this year went a bit far! wink.gif

I'm not sure we could win it every year, because the eurovision is seen as so naff that few decent musicians want to be associated with it. However, if this wasn't the case, then, looking at the competition... tongue.gif

Cheers,
David.
(don't take this post too seriously!)

Hehehe... thanks for all the remarks. I always make it a point to always watch Eurovision every year, purely for the reason 2Bdecided has mentioned for Terry Wogan's comments, always cracks me up with laughter. We are (as in Australia) getting the re run of the Eurovision telecast this Saturday with all of Terry's remarks left in, which I already made a date with the VCR machine to tape it hehehehe tongue.gif

I love watching it purely as it is so much fun to actually watch the show (if you don't take it seriously), have a few beers and your set for a nice evening. biggrin.gif

Cheers

I thought Terry was a bit off-form this year, although he got going a bit more when the voting (& alcohol) kicked in.

As far as the UK entry was concerned, nul points says it all really. Singing off-key throughout the entire song was some achievement smile.gif

Yes. I'm another one who has to do annual penance, with a suitable amount of alcohol, of course!! wink.gif

Wogan used to take it more seriously a few years ago before he, like everyone else, realised that the voting has absolutely nothing to do with musical appreciation and everything to do with politics!! tongue.gif In fact, he got so much into the spirit of it a couple of years, or so, ago that I swear he was several parts cut while broadcasting!

Just to add a truly shocking comment (for a Brit, that is), judged on quality of musicality I thought the French entry was the best by a 'country mile'!

I think Eurovision illustrates how crap songs can get if they are written on demand...

And here I am, wondering WTF is Eurovision. biggrin.gif

Honestly the Belgium song (and maybe the Tatu one) would be the only one I would leave playing on the radio without hurting my ears. The fact that they used an imaginary language (like Meredith Monk, Sigur Ros, Cocteau Twins etc) was a nice surprise for such a crap contest. Pity that they didn't win...not that it matters that much anyway.

The turkish song just managed to immitate the style of Shakira with a more eastern flavor...it was not the worst, but there were better as well.

Our participant should have won the "best vocal performace" award, since she does have an amazing voice in general, but her song was pathetic to say the least...still less cult and obnoxious than our proposal from last year.

Eurovision is a contest where art is always absent (with just a few very rare exceptions, that just prove the rule)...just an excuse to gather around with a few friends, eat some pizzas, drink a few beers and laugh with the participants. The only problem is that occurs just one time a year sad.gif

I have to admit that that Turkey's song is quite catchy...

I think our participant should have won the best "cleavage award" wink.gif biggrin.gif

Hehe...I admired the "gothic" appearance with the metal black cross pointing towards her gifted breast...it's not surprising that it was the Germans who offered us 4 points laugh.gif

Eurovision song contest.
European countries sends one song (choosen thru a national competition) to the Eurovision song contest and ppl from all Europe vote thru the telephone for their favourite song --> you find the best song.

My favourite song was no doubt the Austria one with that crazy guy singing some mix of German Tyrolese and heavy metal.
That was fun (especially after a few beers). Mostly the rest was just crap.

Heh, I thought it was just my select social group that stayed in with beer and laughed loud and long at that show. Turns out its a European trend!

Yes - that one had me and my wife staring in disbelief! "Favourite" isn't a word that springs to mind though wink.gif

Is there a Eurovision drinking game? If not, someone should invent one. I don't drink very much, but it still sounds like a fun idea!

Cheers,
David.

RoFL!!!! This thread is full of laughter!!! biggrin.gif

Drinking game... hmmm lets see...

A shot when your favourite of the night gets a vote... a double shot when your least favourite gets a vote... and a triple shot when either one of your favourite does not get a vote. I think that would do it simple and easy and with that I think you will get drunk pretty quickly if you haven't gotten to that stage already! biggrin.gif

BTW That game is purely to get drunk to drown out the misery! wink.gif

IMO Eurovision (here in Germany people just call it the "Grand Prix") is utter crap. The songs are either cheesy romantic ballads or equally boring lifeless soft-pop. I have yet to hear one song with energy. It sounds like they are trying very hard to not offend anyone even a little bit. Loads of wishy washy shallow BS. All of Germany's contributions I know are despicable. tongue.gif

bluewer than blue, what did you mean by:

Huh? What's so special about offering 4 points? I don't get it... I didn't follow the show, so maybe it was the only 4 points you got. In that case... lol smile.gif

For those wondering.

Since "gothic" is quite popular around there (comparing to other countries), and considering that, if you don't count Cyprus (and you shouldn't), Germany gave us more points than any other country (5...I was wrong about 4 in the other post), I'm sure that we owe everything to the dress...total points of Greece: 25 (-Cyprus 12=13)

I used to watch the Eurovision every year when I was a kid (didn't have much choice, everybody watched it in my home). It was really a great (as in big) event and everybody would talk about it the day after. Nowadays it's just sad. I don't know if it's just because I'm older now and the show was always crap, and I just didn't noticed it when I was a kid. The fact is that everything's ridiculous: the voting, the songs, how everyone dresses, the comments... IMHO it's just a waste of money... not even a social event nowadays (the ratings have dropped a LOT in most countries).

Well, just as an aside. The UK entry was crap, sung off key, but, the girl from Jemini was pretty fit. Well, maybe not uber-fit, but I think she's definately worth buying a drink for.

Having watched the BBC's "Have I got news for you" (Current Affairs satire programme), the quote I liked was "Jemini we're known to say that they had problems with the sound rigging onstage at the Eurovision.", to which a critic replied "Yes, the microphones were working!" wink.gif.

P.S. As ever, Rachel Stevens is really the only pop chick worth the effort... :B tongue.gif
